Posted Breed: Pekingese (short coat). I have no idea what breed to put this boy down as!! He's here because someone said he was a peke/shih tzu mix,,, and since he was absolutely hairless at the time, it was hard to dispute that theory or any other one!! He has since grown his hair back and he's certainly not a peke.... what we do know is that he's a terribly sweet little guy who gets along quite well with other dogs. He's got one eye that looks like a white marble,, obviously no vision out of it, but it doesn't bother him and we hate to put him thru a surgery to remove it solely for cosmetic reasons. We're hoping that someone will see past the strange looking eye, and see the sweet lovable dog he is. We'll post better pictures soon.

Pekingese

A.K.A. : Peking lion dog, Lion Dog, Chinese Spaniel, Pelchie Dog, Peking Palasthund
Overview: The Pekingese, named for the Chinese city of Peking (now known as Beijing), requires weekly brushing of their luxurious coat. Happy little dogs, this breed can make a terrific pet for families and is well-suited for apartment life.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): not to exceed 14
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: All colors and patterns are allowable.
Coat: Long, coarse-textured, straight, stand-off outer coat with thick, soft undercoat. The coat forms a mane on the neck and shoulder area. Longer fringing on the ears and tail.
Character: Pekingese dogs are very affectionate, though they are not known for a fondness for strangers.
Temperament: This breed gets along fine with children and other animals, as long as they are properly socialized. They do not like to be disturbed while sleeping and so may not be suited for homes with small children.
Care: The Pekingese requires a good deal of grooming. This includes frequent brushing and shampooing. Excessive hair around the footpads requires occasional trimming.
Training: This breed requires careful attention and positive reinforcement in training.
Activity: The Pekingese needs a low level of exercise, making him especially well suited for apartment living.
Country of Origin: China
Health Issue: This breed is prone to catching colds, herniated disks, and dislocated kneecaps.
Life Expectancy: 10-15

More About Pekingese Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Pekingese
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Oakdale, TN
Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). We have a pair of little girls here who would like to stick together!! Sugar is a 10 year old Peke who weighs about 13#.... Little Sugar may look like a sour-puss,, but that's just the little peke face and typical peke attitude.. She gets along well with other dogs,,, but doesn't take too much guff off one even if they're bigger. They are housebroken, get along great with other dogs and love people. They would thrive with a fenced yard to run around in,,, but leash walks would be fine too. This is a courtesy posting,,, for more details please contact their foster mom at jahayden2008@yahoo.com

Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). Pressley hasn't been with us long..... she's doing great with the other small dogs,, but seems very timid about humans. She will initiate contact and then turn tail and run! We understand that she didn't get a lot of socialization especially recently, so it may take her awhile to decide to trust new people again. But she's cute and absolutely no trouble,,,, so if you're looking for a little senior lady to hang out at your house,,,, this one would like to apply. We think Pressley would particularly love to have a Daddy in her new family........

      Breed: Japanese Chin
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Oakdale, TN
Posted Breed: Japanese Chin (medium coat). This little guy has obviously been abused.... he's had his back legs seriously injured and likely received no medical care in a timely manner,,,, so now he has a very unusual gait. But it doesn't slow him down one bit!! He's just been neutered he's managed to figure out the doggie door and getting up on the furniture and his social skills with other dogs are tremendous. And we decided he looks just like a little red panda and have renamed him accordingly. We also recently discovered that the injury caused him some nerve damage as well,, so occassionally , when he's busy running around and hopping up and down off the furniture, he's not aware that's he's leaving little droppings in his wake! His big hurdle is going to be finding someone who can work thru his real fear of strangers. He showed us on this travels to rescue that he's very quick to accept his "new person",, but seems to only be able to trust one person at a time just yet. We're hopeful that as he finds that he's met many nice people he might come to understand that he can deal with them in larger numbers. But for now,,, it's going to take a special person with a willingness to keep him safe while he learns to trust again. He still shows aggression toward any man that tries to pet him or enters his area.

      Breed: Pekingese
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Oakdale, TN
Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). This little sweetheart is just looking for a nice loving retirement home! He's small and sweet and a little wonky on the backend,, but he doesn't let that slow him down. He's adapted amazingly well to foster care and gets along fine with other dogs. He doesn't demand much attention but loves an extra treat of canned dog food any chance he gets... If you're looking for a quiet senior gentleman to be a companion to you or maybe another senior dog, little Tuesday might be just the guy for the job.

      Location: Oakdale, TN
Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). This little senior gentleman is just getting thru his vetting and will be so happy to get rid of that pesky lampshade!! But he's cruising around the back patio and checking out his foster siblings. He seems to have great social skills with other small dogs (which are all we've seen him around) but he's not real sure of strange humans yet. We don't know if that attitude will chance as he settles in or if he's always going to be kind of a "one person" or "one family" kind of guy. He came in with lots of mats and indications of rather lax care but good nutrition and some grooming is already making a difference in those problems....

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Oakdale, TN
Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). Connor is a sweet little dude who came to us from a shelter. He shows indications of long term eye issues and has little if any vision. That doesn't slow him down a bit though. Like most dogs,, he relies on his ears and his nose,,, not his eyes. He's bigger (longer bodied) that the typical peke,, and we don't know what else might be lurking in his heritage. But whatever it is,,, he is a sweet boy who plays well with others and isn't much bother.. he's another white with tan boy who looks like a "brother from another mother" when you look at some of our other kids!! Pics will be coming soon.

      Location: Oakdale, TN
Posted Breed: Pug / Eskimo Spitz (medium coat). Virgie is a total mystery to us! He was supposed to be a peke mix,,,,, but he has straight legs and looks more like the overbite and smushed face part of his appearance might have come from a pug ancestor, instead of a peke............... We don't know what kind of a coat he'll have when his hair grows back,, right now he looks like a miniature American Bulldog! He's sweet as can be and loves to run around and play. He likes face time with his people.... but keeps busy playing with the other dogs. We got some pictures this afternoon while the kids played in the backyard! Will try for more soon.

      Lil Bit and ...

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Pekingese
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Oakdale, TN
Posted Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). Lil Bit and Big Sis came up to us from Florida,,, both are supposed to be blind... and Lil Bit is,,,we're not quite sure with Big Sis............ They depend on each other to some extent,,,, but that has been lessening as they settled in. Big Sis goes her own way a lot of the time and wanders around checking things out,, while Lil Sis spends most of her time sleeping in one dog bed or another,,,, she goes out on the deck and spends a lot of time out there in decent weather. Occasionally she'll go down the ramp into the yard and then get confused and holler for help...... but she seems to know that help will come,, and she doesn't get upset about it... They are both estimated to be about 9-10 yrs old and have been vetted and are heartworm negative and have great appetites (we're going to have to rename 'Lil Sis' soon at the rate she's going!!) If you have room in your home and heart for a little blind dog or two who are very low maintenance and very appreciative of any attention shown them,,,, I'd like to nominate this pair.
