Posted Breed: Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Bunny is a healthy, small (23 lbs) 5-10 years old female Beagle mix. She is a quiet, gentle, playful girl and very friendly towards people and other dogs. She is well crate trained and quickly settles in for a nap. She would be a great dog for most homes, but like most Beagles she is very stubborn and energetic and will require lots of attention and exercise. Her gentle, submissive nature should make her well-suited to homes with small children and/or multiple dogs. Her attitude towards cats or other house pets is unknown. ***Bunny is heartworm positive. She will be available for adoption once she is healthy, so please fill out an application if you are interested in adopting her. If you are unable to adopt at this time, please consider making a donation toward her medical expenses.***

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Shelby

      Breed: Labbe
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Beagle / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). NAME: Shelby BREED: Beagle Mix BIRTHDAY: 2008 WEIGHT: 50lbs ADOPTION FEE: $100 Shelby is a sweet, funny girl who may or may not be a beagle mix. We were expecting a petite lady but picked up a tall, chubby gal off transport. At 50lbs (with a couple to lose) it's anyone's guess as to Shelby's lineage, but whatever she is we are in love! Shelby spends most of her days lounging around and scaring her foster mom by looking dead. She is completely deaf so her noisy foster siblings don't bother her, and it's usually her nose or her stomach that wake her up. Shelby enjoys the company of other dogs and likes to romp and play, and ignores cats altogether. She likes meeting new people and is quiet and polite. Shelby is trustworthy enough to be loose in the house when no one is home, but she does tend to find an open crate to curl up in anyway. We let her lay wherever she'd like, since she is such a good girl and seems happy to just be out of the shelter. Please consider giving Shelby a home and a family of her own. She will be a fun and easy addition for anyone!

      Breed: Husky-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Elkhound / Husky / Mixed (medium coat). Please Note: Diesel is listed as a courtesy for an individual looking to rehome him. He is not a Good Old Tails foster and we do not have any additional information about him. Please use the contact info provided to communicate about adopting Diesel. Diesel is a handsome 4 year old neutered male Elkhound/Husky mix. He has lived most of his life on a chain but is a friendly boy who loves new people, especially children. His owner is in failing health and can no longer provide a good life for him. Diesel will need basic training and a home with a fenced yard and/or an active family. He does listen well and although he likes to jump up he is not nippy and really just wants to be loved. If you are interested in meeting Diesel please contact Megan at GGDoll120@aol.com and she will put you in touch with his owner. They live about an hour north of Harrisburg. Basic screening is required prior to adoption.

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). NAME: Mose BREED: Pit Mix BIRTHDAY: 2013 WEIGHT: 50lbs ADOPTION FEE: $125 Sweet young Mose had a rough time of things before getting dumped in a crowded shelter. He limps from an untreated injury to his leg (we are treating it now of course), his teeth are worn from too many hours in a crate or cage, and he is infested with heartworm (also being treated). Additionally, Mose wasn't neutered and had other parasites, all signs of neglect and improper care. Despite all of this, and despite being frightened and alone in the shelter, Mose was a sweetheart who showed the volunteers that he wanted to be saved! In foster care, Mose has been the best boy and a delight to care for. He is good with dogs of all sizes and although he was nervous about the cats at first, he is now friends with them too. He is house trained and does fine for reasonable periods in his crate. Mose also walks well on leash and rides well in the car, and sleeps quietly through the night in his foster mom's room. It will take a bit of work to get him completely healthy, but we couldn't be happier to help this awesome guy! Mose can continue his treatments in his forever home, so apply now so you don't miss out on adopting a great dog!

Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). NAME: Precious BREED: Chihuahua BIRTHDAY: 2006 WEIGHT: 10lbs ADOPTION FEE: Precious is a fun little piglet who has adjusted beautifully to life in her busy foster home. She doesn't see well but likes to explore and is happy to make new friends. Her owner seemed to be taking good care of her, as she came to the shelter with extensive veterinary records, but for some reason she wasn't wanted anymore and was left there to die. Precious is diabetic and takes insulin twice a day, which is a difficult condition for the shelter to handle- they did not plan on being able to keep her there long, but luckily we had space and she made the long trip up from South Carolina. We've never had a pet with diabetes before and were a little nervous about keeping up with Precious' meds, but she takes her injections with no problems and the insulin is very inexpensive. Precious is also on a prescription food for urinary issues, but she doesn't eat much so that's no big deal either. All in all she has been a sweet, loving, and easy addition to our foster family, and we are so happy we were able to get her out of the shelter safely!

Posted Breed: Dachshund (short coat). NAME: Suzie BREED: Dachshund BIRTHDAY: 2004 WEIGHT: 10lbs ADOPTION FEE: $125 Sometimes the best thing that could happen to the dogs we meet is that they were dumped at the shelter. Dogs like Suzie who were being neglected and suffering from untreated medical issues can finally get the help they need to be healthy. Suzie almost didn't make it out of the shelter alive, but hitched a ride with some cats who were flying to us on the day she was scheduled to be euthanized. She had a mouth full of bad teeth and a dental abscess so bad it was oozing out through her cheek. Her nails were painfully overgrown and she was missing a lot of hair thanks to a bad flea infestation. Despite her obvious discomfort, Suzie was full of tail wags and kisses, and was happy to have an adventure and make new friends. She is good with dogs of all sizes as well as cats and respectful children. We'll never know why Suzie's owner gave her away, but we're so happy they did: Suzie has brought joy and laughter to her foster home and we know it's just a matter of time before she's settling into her forever home once and for all.

      Cocoa

      Breed: Chihuahua

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). NAME: Cocoa BREED: Chihuaua BIRTHDAY: 2011 WEIGHT: 5lbs ADOPTION FEE: $150 Here's another case of a small young dog we shouldn't have had to help. Cocoa is obviously adorable and is half the age of the dogs we usually take in. He is small and quiet and enormously sweet and cuddly. But untreated glaucoma has taken his eyesight and led to painful pressure that he has endured for years. He was a hard sell at the shelter because treatment is very expensive, but we couldn't leave him there to die. Cocoa is getting eye drops three times a day until we can see the specialist and make plans for a permanent solution. You can see the improvement in the pictures- the pressure on his eyes has lessened, and he is more comfortable and happier exploring and being handled. Although the drops are very pricey, we will continue to treat him for as long as needed. If you are unable to adopt Cocoa or another GOT dog at this time, please consider donating to his ongoing care!

      Schroeder

      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). NAME: Schroeder BREED: Chihuahua BIRTHDAY: 2008 WEIGHT: 10lbs ADOPTION FEE: $125 Attention Chihuahua lovers! We've got a little fellow who encompasses all you love about this breed: small, sassy, big-dog attitude... Schroeder has it all! He is good with dogs and cats but they know who is in charge of things around here. Nobody gets hurt, at least not on the outside (sometimes being too bossy can hurt your friends' feelings!) and nobody takes him too seriously. Schroeder loves his foster dad but is a little selective with new people. Slow introductions are a must, and young children in his new home will be a no-go. Before you pass Schroeder off as just another stubborn Chihuahua, let's review the positives about this little guy. He is house trained and doesn't get crated when no one is home, he is quiet and handles stairs with no trouble. You will always be amused by his burrowing, and will have a great time touching all the lumpy blankets to find which one he's under. He is not too needy, and finds his favorite person when he needs to be petted. He has had a dental cleaning and eats dry or canned food without fuss. Schroeder is a nice fellow who just needs someone who understands him. Please help him find a home where he will be loved and spoiled forever!

      Dave

      rescue
      Breed: Beagle
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Beagle (short coat). NAME: Dave BREED: Beagle BIRTHDAY: 2010 WEIGHT: 25lbs ADOPTION FEE: $150 Dave came to us from a crowded shelter after being found as a stray. He is completely blind; his condition is called SARDS (sudden acquired retinal degeneration), which is not painful and does not affect other areas of his overall health. Dave is a brave boy who adjusted well to life in his foster home. He has a lot of energy and loves to explore inside and out. He is great with other dogs but may be too much for cats who aren't dog-savvy. Dave loves getting attention from everyone he meets; despite being blind he is very confident and is friendly with all people. He even likes to rough-house and wrestles with his foster mom and dog brothers. Dave was recently diagnosed with a congenital defect to his trachea. He has a mild cough that is easily managed with medication every few days. Dave is a real chow hound so he takes his pills eagerly with canned food or pill pockets. Or a hot dog. Or cheese. Or mashed potatoes. Dave loves food. All Dave needs to be happy and feel safe is a little time to adjust and patience while he navigates his surroundings. He is house and crate trained, walks well on a leash, rides well in the car, and is always up for an adventure. This little fellow is going to make a sweet and fun addition to his new family! For his safety and your sanity, Dave will require a fenced yard. Please research beagles before applying for Dave- his noise and energy levels are very typical of his breed!
