More About Boxer Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Velma and her brother Fred were rescued from underneath a flooded mobile home in February. Theirs is truly a "rescue" story. They were trapped underneath the mobile home positioned on the I-beam that forms the base of the home. They were about 6-8 inches tall and the water was about 12-14 inches high--if they had fallen off the beam they most likely would have drowned. We coaxed them onto a makeshift ramp with popcorn chicken and once they got close enough we snatched them up. They are still quite shy but are becoming braver every day. They LOVE to run and play and chew and dig. They also greatly enjoy sitting in your lap and taking in whatever is going on around them. Velma enjoys watching TV and has the more daring personality. Loud noises frighten them easily as do larger dogs. They would probably do best in a home without young children and without a lot of activity at first. They are easy to care for. Posted Breed: Wirehaired Fox Terrier / Mixed. Page (F) and Powell (M) are 7 year-old Fox terriers and bonded siblings. They have spent their whole lives together and their previous owner, who passed away suddenly. They are peppy dogs with tons of personality. They love to wrestle with toys, run around in the backyard, and go on leashed hikes but they also love to snuggle up on the couch with their person. They especially love a long drive in the car. They are good with kids, and playful with other dogs, though sometimes they don’t know when to stop and play with their mouths so will need a leader to let them know when they need to relax, they do take correction from other dogs well. Powell shouldn't be let off leash because he will just wander off. I would love to see them go to a home with someone who will take them on leashed hikes, and has a fenced in backyard. They can be a little mouthy when playing, so young kids might not be best, but we are working on that. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Sazerac was picked up as a mostly hairless (from mange) yard sale give away puppy. He was the most pitiful little thing you have ever seen. Fast forward to now: he has a beautiful coat and a LOT of puppy energy to go with it!! He will play with dogs, cats and couches if the former are not available. He was in isolation for a while due to his skin condition and his young age so he is not house trained but will use puppy pads in the house and is super smart so house training should be super easy. Hopefully he will have some tolerant residents who will play with him. Other wise be prepared to throw toys and play tug for ever. Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed. Manchester, aka "Manny," is a spunky little dude. He loves to romp and play. He will chase a ball and is getting more consistent about bringing it back. He loves a good squeaky toy. He's on his way to being house trained and has not pottied anywhere he's not supposed to since the earliest days. He LOVES his food and is ready for mealtime anytime. A perfect home for Manchester would be one with another energetic dog or two and/or one with older kids who can help him use his energy and be patient as he finishes learning his manners. Skylark

      verified

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Skylark is not just a pretty face, she is also a sweet, smart, happy dog. She has great obedience and household management training. Crates well, is a fabulous companion in the car. She loves and is loyal to her people. Skylark is strong and athletic, but we don’t think she requires more than a couple 20 minutes walks a day and/or some sessions of fetch, tug, or the classic “run around with sticks”, although she could handle more activity. She had started to become a good running partner, but her foster parents have fallen off the running wagon, so she is probably currently in shape for someone who is just starting out running. Maybe you’re thinking “Skylark must be named for the early model Buick. She is beautiful, powerful and sleek. I bet she’d never be down for binge watching TV.” You couldn’t be more wrong. Sure, she likes to get the blood moving on the regular with some good exercise…but that blood beats through the heart of a true snuggler. Nothing would make her happier at the end of a good day than to be on the couch while you hold something she wants to chew on, her love for you dripping like her drool on your hand. And after that, turn up the TV just a little bit so you can hear it over her sweet, melodious snores. She is NOT well suited for dog parks or doggie day care situations; so potential adopters should be interested in a dog that is all about their humans. She has lived with dogs, doesn’t hate them…but she can rub them the wrong way (she’s a little more “in your face” than canine etiquette dictates), so being an only pet would probably be her most stress free life. She occasionally has moments of exuberance (remember Tigger from Winnie the Pooh?) and this, combined with her size and strength, means that we think she would probably be better suited in an adult only (and Piglet free) home. Age: 3 years Weight: 65 lbs. If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application on our website at http://www.lasthopek9.org/ For more photos, or information on upcoming adoption events, please visit our Facebook page.
