Visit our FAQ webpage for commonly asked questions about our adoption/foster process. Brooke is very attentive and responsive to her foster family. She ‘talks’ and ‘listens’ to us with her big brown eyes. She and my two cats have established satisfactory boundaries, if not rapport. She’s excited to ‘go for a ride ‘ in the car. She’s content to go into her crate when I leave the house. At night she sleeps blissfully on her bed on the floor next to my bed. She loves chasing and retrieving her ball outside. She has developed a more gentle game of ‘ball’ for inside. She loves to run in the woods and swim in the lake up north. Brooke was given up by her previous owner because of problems with a second dog— her brother. She was considered to be dog reactive and so was hard to place with a foster, given that most fosters have a least one dog of their own. Brooke spent almost a year in boarding, where she became a favorite with the volunteers and staff. When I came along as a new potential foster without a dog of my own, Brooke became my first foster. Brooke is reactive to other dogs and people. With the help of the trainer at LDDR, she has been slowly learning calmer more positive reactions. Her new owner needs to be willing and able to continue the training while managing her environment. LDDR training classes are free for adopters to continue with Brooke after adoption. Brooke should be the only dog in the home. A home with young children would also not be appropriate for Brooke. She would do best with a fenced in yard where she can safely play ball . Though she walks nicely on the leash, she needs to be kept far enough away from triggers - like a charging dog behind an invisible fence. Brooke is a special dog who needs a special owner who will continue to work with her training and give her the time she needs to settle in. *Brooke is part of the Rf Litter Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal. The Petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our animals. Visual breed identification in animals is unreliable so for most of the animals we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each animal as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our animals based on personality, not by breed label. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 285. I am a fun, playful, happy and sweet girl. I love to train and learn new things in exchange for tasty bits. Even though I have had some hard knocks I am resilient and full of a zest for life. Because I am powerful I will need a compassionate leader who understands my breed and is willing to regularly work with me. I will also need a home with a strong crate or kennel for when you are away. I would do best as an only pet. I do have a strong prey drive and cannot live with small animals. Like many dogs, I can be over-excited at times and should not live with children. Maybe you are a little like me, constant barking gets me upset and makes it difficult to remain calm. I do like other dogs but I get along best with dogs who are not reactive. Do you like playing games? Some of my favorite games are making eye contact, touching my nose to your hand and foraging for kibble. I am not really built for long-distance running but I do love to sprint and will amaze you with my speed in short bursts. I am up to date on all vaccinations and fully vetted. I can't wait to meet you! If you would like to meet this lovable girl please fill out an application today.

I would do really well in an active house hold. Kids who can run me around a back yard would be amazing for me. But not too little I am a big girl at 70 pounds. I’m very jealous of other dogs. Being the only dog is best for now. We work on my listening skills a lot. I am a really good jumper. You’ll need to keep that in mind. I am crate trained and love a good run. Visit our FAQ webpage for commonly asked questions about our adoption/foster process. Hello fabulous people! My name is Sahara. I just joined the LDDR family a few weeks ago and my foster family is getting to know me. I love food and people but I probably should be in a home with children over the age of 10 and no other pets in the home. Since my time in the shelter, I have become a little apprehensive of the things going on around me. I was living in a shelter in Ohio for a few months and need a family that has patience, and that can help me to become the dog my foster family knows that I can be. My foster mom says that I have lots of energy but that I calm down and become a couch potato very nicely. I am looking for my furever family. Visit our FAQ webpage for commonly asked questions about our adoption/foster process. “A dark eyed beauty with a smile all her own.” Hi! I’m Ellie, a sweet, affectionate girl who is on a journey to find my forever home. I was rescued from an abandoned yard and am so excited to have an opportunity to find a family that I can love. Training and trust have been key on the road to my transformation from orphan to loyal companion. I’m learning how to interact properly with dogs of various sizes, and how to listen to my handler when distractions exist. I know many commands, such as sit, stay, shake, no, come, go potty, down, roll over, and give kisses. I’m house trained, leash trained and crate trained. I love as much positive attention as possible, (who doesn’t?) and am not certain I want to share your affection with other animals. I like Nylabones, Kong toys and real bones but have a hard time sharing such treats with canine buddies. (I never got any before I was rescued.) A home where I can be the sole shining canine star would be ideal. I’ve been described as very affectionate, (I love cuddles!), sensitive, and mostly submissive. I can be insecure when it comes to loud noises, such as thunderstorms and fireworks. My future owners will need to be patient and kind, and continue with my training and socialization. I’m a sweet girl who is longing for a home where I’ll never be left behind again. Can you help me complete my journey and make my dreams of a loving home come true? She is a terrier mix with possibly some bull terrier in her. Harley is very affectionate and is happiest when she is cuddling with you and actually touching you. I think she would be better with older children than with real young ones. She would enjoy a fenced yard where she could run and play. Harley is housebroken and tells you when she wants to go out. Harley is smart and would most likely excel at obedience or agility or possibly other dog sports. It's hard to see it in her photos, but she is white with black spots (like a Dalmation) on the backs of her ears. She is quite unique and a beautiful dog. I just want to play!" Meet Prince, an active 6 year old Black Labrador Retriever / German Shorthair Pointer mix. Poor Prince was confined to an apartment with no socialization and little attention because the family lost interest in him. LDDR agreed to take Prince and find the right home for him. He is now receiving lots of playtime and TLC in his foster home while waiting for a forever home. Prince is your typical busy dog that will do best in a home with an adopter who is willing to work with him to teach him some proper manners. He can be a bit wary of unknown people and would need slow introductions to someone he doesn't know. A fenced yard would be ideal to play ball, as that’s his favorite thing to do. Prince walks well on a leash except when a car goes by. He currently has a desire to chase moving cars. He is perfectly housetrained and will bark at the door to let you know he needs to go out, and he will bark at the door to come back in, too. Prince is good with most dogs when properly introduced. He seems to ignore cats, but has never lived with one. For more information or questions, email Tim at tmb611@msn.com. Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption.
