| Overview: | The Scottish Deerhound is a great companion for all in your family. They love children and can be very gentle playmates. Although quiet and well-mannered indoors, this dog loves to get out and run in open spaces. He needs special care for his beautiful coat. |

| Colors: | All shades of gray and gray brindle, with dark blue-gray preferred. |
| Coat: | The hair on the body, neck and quarters is harsh and wiry about 3 or 4" long, on the head, breast and belly-much softer. The ideal coat is a thick, close-lying, ragged coat, harsh or crisp to the touch. |
| Character: | Scottish Deerhounds are gentle and intelligent dogs. |
| Temperament: | This breed gets along well with similar dogs and children. They often have difficulty controlling their hunting instincts around smaller animals, however, so they may not be very suited to living with cats. |
| Care: | The crisp coat needs combing one or two times weekly, plus minimal stripping around the face and ears. |
| Training: | This breed learns very quickly. He's eager to please, so training will be straightforward. |
| Activity: | The Scottish Deerhound needs a lot of exercise; it can run freely or trot alongside a bicycle to stay fit. |
| Health Issue: | Major concerns: Gastric torsion, osteosarcoma. Minor concerns: Cardiomyopathy. Note: Sensitive to anesthesia. |
