We will make every attempt to process all applications within 3 business days of receipt // // Olga is a sweet, fun, and cute little 14.5 pound, chihuahua mix born in approximately September of 2011. She is shy and cautious with new people, but that all fades once she gets to know you. She is great with other dogs after proper introductions, and is fostered with a 55 lb. shepherd mix (they LOVE to play together). Olga is more comfortable with women than men at first, but can quickly warm up if super yummy treats are involved as she falls for a good bribe. She would do best in a home with another dog and a yard, and is fine with older kids that know to let her approach them for introductions. She loves the family-snuggle-on-the-couch movie nights, and she wants to have her share of your bed so she can tunnel under the covers for the night. She is spayed, micro chipped, and up to date on her shots. Olga's adoption fee is $100 which helps Second Chance Dog Rescue cover spay/neuter costs, vaccinations, medical treatments, food and supplies. ♥ All of our dogs are in private volunteer foster homes, and as such these individuals are most qualified to answer any questions regarding the dog. We do not have a central shelter or kennel locations - you must make a private one-on-one meet and greet appointment with each individual dog at the foster family's convenience. To protect our foster families' privacy, we must have an APPROVED adoption application on file before we release their contact information. All of our dogs are fixed (spayed/neutered) and up to date on shots. We have a 2 week foster-to-adopt period to make sure the dog is a fit for your family. Adoption fees vary from dog-to-dog. Please note that an approved application DOES NOT guarantee that the dog will be placed with you. The final decision rests with our fosters as they know the dogs the best, and please be aware that there may be other applicants interested in the same dog. We continue accepting applications on a dog until the dog is with the new adoptive family in their home. Thank you for visiting our dogs located at www.SecondChanceDogRescue.org

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

We will make every attempt to process all applications within 3 business days of receipt // // Guava the Chihuahua would love to be your lap dog. Guava is a sweet little girl who is 10 years young and weighs about 7 lbs. Guava is house trained and would be an awesome & easy-to-live-with kind of dog for a quiet household. She is good around other dogs, great with the foster's dog-tolerant cat, and travels well in a crate or on your lap. UPDATE: Guava was thought to have a condition known as dry-eye and needing twice daily eye drops (an inexpensive but necessary lifetime requirement). However, her recent followup vet appointment for eyes is showing Guava has eye tear production (Yea!) and her eye drops have been reduced to once a day. We are hopeful that eye drops will be reduced to maintenance or as needed kind of thing, and even more hopeful that the the eye drops can be stopped altogether. Guava would do great in an apartment and enjoys short walks around the neighborhood. She is a little timid with new people, but she is all smiles with those she knows and loves. She has a sweet little bark to warn you when people are at the door and quickly calms when she knows they are welcome. She tends to like women a tiny bit more than men, but good treats are the tipping point to this little girl's heart. Guava is a bit of a couch potato and loves to nap. She tends to move her dog bed around till it is in Just the Right Spot (usually right in the middle of the room). She will sleep at the end of your bed if you let her, or will be happy in a dog bed on the floor if you insist. She appreciates a lift up or a step up onto couches & beds. Guava is spayed, micro-chipped, up to date on her vaccinations, and has recently had a dental. We will make every attempt to process all applications within 3 business days of receipt // // Carrie is looking for someone who knows how to pamper a poodle. Carrie is gentle and sweet, and a stay-at-home kind of girl who likes a daily routine, lots of naps in the chair with you, short slow walks to satisfy her curiosity, and will happily embrace a low-key lifestyle. Carrie is 9 years old and almost 9 lbs. Carrie came into the shelter super skinny, very neglected and very matted. She was rescued as a candidate for air flight back East where poodles are in short supply. Unfortunately, Carrie is super-anxious in a crate, so she can't qualify for plane flights and ended up in our rescue. She is house trained when allowed out on a predictable schedule. Carrie does not hear very well, so she would LOVE to have a home with another poodle her size that can hear so she can follow their lead. She is learning signs for Hello, Go Out, Come, Good Girl, GotoBed and Treat! If you have noisy neighbors or roommates, she will sleep through the night in a dog bed in your bedroom or in your bed if it is low to the ground. Carrie had quite a makeover, including a dental, spay, hernia surgery, and even new (and somewhat necessary) super-short hairstyle for the summer. She prefers wet or soft food for dental reasons. She receives a daily low dose of liquid glucosamine chondroitin for gait issues due to an old hip fracture and a slippery left back kneecap, but she walks well and likes to explore. Carrie should always be on a leash because she cannot hear you recall her and will be focused on where her nose & eyes lead her. She appreciates a step or help to be able to curl up in her favorite chair for a snooze. She is okay with the dog-tolerant cat in her foster home, and good with other dogs of all sizes. Like all poodles, she needs regular professional or at-home grooming for health and comfort. Carrie is ready to be someone's adored and cherished poodle girl. She is spayed, up-to-date on shots, microchipped, had a professional haircut that made her prance around, had a vet examine her hip & knee issues, and has had hernia surgery and a dental.

We will make every attempt to process all applications within 3 business days of receipt // // Meet Palomita! Palomita is an active playful attentive girl who gets along well with other dogs. She is about 3 yeard old- an American bulldog-Pit mix and can't wait to have her own family. She loves any toys and LOVES to eat. She is such a happy girl and very strategically plants herself in front of the other dogs so she can be petted. With Palomita you will never be alone - she will follow you to the bathroom and will get up to greet you the second you stir in the morning ( or in the middle of the night ) She has been around toddlers and does not pay much attention to them. She loves everyone she meets. She comes when called and sits - briefly. She loves the car and is working on walking with a leash. She is house broken. Her big smile and big wiggly butt (she weighs 56) will brighten your day and your life. Her snoring will always let you know where she's sleeping. Palomita is spayed, microchipped and current on her vaccinations. Her adoption fee is $250 which helps Second Chance Dog Rescue cover spay/neuter costs, vaccinations, medical treatments, food and supplies. ♥ Palomita will require her adoptive family to be local in San Diego and a home visit prior to completing adoption. All of our dogs are in private volunteer foster homes, and as such these individuals are most qualified to answer any questions regarding the dog. We will make every attempt to process all applications within 3 business days of receipt // // Meet Robbie! Robbie is a 4 year old, 12 lb Minpin mix. Robbie can be a little bit of shy guy at first, but once he becomes comfortable with you he is very cuddly and loving. So much so, that he will do all he can to put himself between you and a book or your laptop if he is snuggling with you on the couch. Robbie is crate trained and will sleep quietly through the night, but he prefers to sleep with you at the foot of your bed. He quietly waits for you to wake up to take him out in the mornings and is mostly house trained. Robbie is learning to walk on a leash. He does get scared from loud cars and motorcycles passing by & will freeze until they safely away. Foster mom has been working with him daily, but he is content having potty breaks in the yard and spending time chilling out in the house. He rides well in the car and gets along fine with other dogs. He likes to follow the pack and does well with all dogs both big and small. Since Robbie is a little bit anxious, he would do best in a quiet adult only household. Robbie has been evaluated by a trainer and we will include a training session with Robbie to introduce him to new home for a smooth transition. Robbie is neutered, microchipped and current on his vaccines. His adoption fee is $250 which helps Second Chance Dog Rescue cover spay/neuter costs, vaccinations, medical treatments, food and supplies. ♥ All of our dogs are in private volunteer foster homes, and as such these individuals are most qualified to answer any questions regarding the dog.
