The Plott hound was bred by the Plott family beginning in the mid 1700s. The breed was used for tracking raccoons and bear in the mountains. The breed is seen only in the eastern USA and is generally used by hunters.

The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

The Shepradors is a hybrid or designer breed that was developed by crossing German Shepherd Dog and a Labrador Retriever. Though the breed was intended to be a 50/50 mix, many of the Shepradors are bred over many generations and may not always be 50% and 50%. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed.
