Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Birthdate (estimated): Hello, I'm Amelia! I am a beautiful, sweet, smart, loyal and loving girl. I hail from the Pine Ridge Reservation and it is believed that I may have been a tribal officer's dog - I heel well, I sit, stay/wait, down, kennel and heel- and if I love and respect you enough I'll listen ;-) I came with a recent head wound, believed to be gunshot, which entered the top of my head and exited through my right eye, leaving me blind in that eye. I am completely healed and have adjusted well to the loss though. I LOVE car rides, I don't care what type of vehicle you have! I just want to be with you and sit looking out the window! I am a VERY energetic girl, and would love a family who will burn off the energy with me. Going for runs, playing fetch in the back yard, etc. An active home will be the best home for me. I will gladly lay quietly with you though, keeping you company. I look forward to finding my forever family, could that be you? Special Requirements: - A fully fenced yard, at least 6' high is a must. I am very athletic, and could easily jump anything shorter to chase after a bunny/squirrel/bird. - I need to be an only animal, as I do not get along with any others. If you are considering me, please understand that social outings will need to be very controlled as I am not a fan of other dogs. - A loving home with medium to high activity level, whether it be going for walks, runs or playing in the backyard. I love to work and play. - Fearful of fireworks, gunshots, etc. So no Fourth of July outings for me. Adoption fee is $125. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

I am a very sweet boy once I warm up to my people. I am currently working on my confidence levels with new situations. One of my obstacles that doesn't help my confidence - is that I am deaf. I need a home that will help me continue to succeed. I take a bit to warm up to people, but if we go for a walk, it will make it much easier for us to be friends! I am potty trained and crate trained. I know sit and down. We are working on some more tricks too! If I am in another room and you need my attention, just flicker the lights and I will come running, unless I'm sleeping. If you think I might be the right match - fill out an adoption application today! I am currently struggling with some allergies - so with the help of my mom we are working on doing a food trial. (Science Diet Z/D) The hard part about this food trial, is it's so expensive! She has included a food description in case you would be willing to help donate a bag or part of the bag. I'm really sick of scratching all the time and we are hoping this will help! Submit an Adoption Application * All animals are in foster homes located throughout the Twin Cities & Central Minnesota. I'm a Shepard mix that's around 6 years old. I was very nervous in the shelter, but now that I'm in a foster home I've really blossomed. It takes me awhile to trust new people (treats help) but when I do, I'm super sweet. I like to give kisses and cuddle. I really love to play fetch and play with any toys that squeak! Give me a Kong full of treats and I can keep content for hours trying to get them out. I'm a VERY smart girl. I know stay, sit, shake, down, no, and probably even more commands that my foster family hasn't discovered yet. I know how to alert my foster family when I need to go potty and I happily go in my kennel when you ask me. I'm getting along with my foster brother dog with slow introductions, I play bow at him every 5 minutes, just so he is sure that I mean business! I have met the cat but she sure didn't like me! I think I'd be good with dog-savvy cats. I'm so happy to be in a home, I can't wait to be in my forever home! Name: Jezabelle DOB: 07/03/16 estimated Weight: 38 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Jezabelle joined Ruff Start Rescue from a shelter who took her in from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She was with them quite a while, fighting some skin issues. Since she has joined her foster family with Ruff Start, we her skin issues have been resolved and she has a beautiful full coat! Jezabelle is a very sweet, loving dog. She loves human attention and craves affection. She is house trained and is doing great while on a schedule. She is also crate trained. Jezabelle is a very smart, fast learner. She already knows how to sit, and she redirects very well when she is doing something naughty, like sniffing the garbage. She does well with other dogs, but takes slow introductions to warm up to them. She does show reactivity when seeing other dogs on a leash so slow intros are best for her. Because of the reactivity to new dogs she does also require a fenced in yard to keep her feeling safe. Jezabelle does okay in the car if she is kenneled. We no longer let her loose in our car as she did get car sick the first time, but she does great when she is kenneled in the car. One of Jezzie's favortie things is to play Tug-O-War, will you be her new tug partner? If you are interested in me, please fill out an adoption application at www.ruffstartrescue.org. I'm shy at first but only because I need to get familiar with my surroundings. I have the most beautiful eyes you have seen... unfortunately they don't see to well, for I am blind. But that doesn't stop me from being a big teddy bear. My foster parents say I'm very easy going, love going for walks, and am a cuddler. But most of all I just love to sit by you and listen to what's going on in the world around me. I don't like to talk much. In fact my foster parents have only heard me once, but I use my nose often to nudge some petting out of them. They laugh because I might not see, but I know instantly when a treat is close. I can spend hours on the porch just listening and sun bathing. I'm hoping my forever family will enjoy that to! Posted Breed: Shepherd / American Bulldog / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Rocket DOB: 03/07/15 estimated Weight: 46 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Adoption requirements (non-negotiable): single family home with a fenced in yard (apartment living is not for Rocket!), no children under 12 years old, no cats or exotic animals, slow intros to other dogs, active lifestyle to give him the exercise he needs. Have you ever seen a cuter noodle? My name is Rocket and my ears are as big as my heart! My papers say I am a German Shepherd, American Bulldog cross although my foster Mom is pretty sure I could be a whole mess of different things. I love playing in the snow, running, fetching balls, and tugging rope! I am hoping to find someone who wants to play and run with me. I've had a few families who got me and realized they didn't like playing as much as I did, but my Foster Mom says my next family will love everything about me. After having so many homes, I ended up in a shelter for 6 months. The director always called me a good boy and would get all teary eyed when she looked in my kennel. All the volunteers had a soft spot for me however, the shelter was loud and I didn't get to stretch my legs for very long. It was making me sad, so I stopped eating and didn't like playing with my kennel mates anymore. When my foster Mom came to get me she realized how despondent I had become since I didn't want to share my food and I would cry if she left me alone. Now that I'm out, I'm trying to get back into the groove of being in a family but it can be hard sometimes. I don't like when people get loud around me or fight, when my other families did that I had to go away. I also get very over excited when I see other dogs, it takes me a little while to realize they want to be my friend. Walking on a leash can be kind of hard for me, because I love being outside so much I just want to explore everything! I really want to stay with my new family forever so I hope they understand I am a smart boy who can work through anything with enough time and devotion. I hope to have a family with a yard who is willing to go outside and play with me for lots of time each day. I love kids who are bigger than me because that way we can clown around, my style of play is just like a real German Shepherd so I use my paws while also tossing my whole body around. My foster Mom calls me Noodle, I don't know. Can my new family like balls, too maybe? Golly, and squirrels? If my new family has another calm dog who they would be willing to let me get to know that would be awesome too. I have two foster siblings I play with all the time, so I would like a playmate in my forever home. Oh, squeaky toys are the best too! I can do lots of tricks for some yummy treats and I love cuddling with my family when the day comes to a close. I'm trying really hard to remember all my manners, slowly but surely they're coming back. Do you have room for a big noodle like me? Posted Breed: Bloodhound / Coonhound / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Lucy DOB: 09/27/14 estimated Weight: 73 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Hello, my name is Lucy, my foster mom says I am a big girl! I weigh about 73lbs, my people think I am a bloodhound/ coonhound mix. I was a stray at a local impound where I sat for 5 months waiting for a home! Luckily, Ruff Start Rescue stepped up to take me so I could continue my search for a forever home while being in a home! I have a lot of energy and love to play! I get along with other dogs with proper introductions. I can be growly at first especially if I am on my leash. I live with other dogs big and small at home. I have a very high prey drive and mom says I can be a little obsessive about chasing small critters if I see them. I have caught a bird flying which I thought was great but mom said was naughty. so I need to be kept away from small critters and cats! I am also all hound so my nose tends to get the best of me. If I smell something I like that I want to find out more about I do my darndest to find that smell, which could get me into some trouble if my people are not super careful. Due to my prey drive and my love to follow my nose I do need a furever home with a fenced in yard, for my safety! This is a requirement for my family. Mom says it has to be a physical fence and not an electric fence as she does not think the electric fence would work for me. I do not live with any kids right now but older children my people think would be just fine. I am a big girl so I might knock kids over and when I play I like to mouth even though its very gentle it may not go well with younger kids. I can also be moody at times when in my kennel or when someone tries to cuddle with me when I want my own time/space. However most the time I am super cuddly. I sleep in a kennel at night and when my family is away, I do well in there and even go in on command, however I do let my parents know with some hound howls when I do not want to be in there. I go potty outside like a good girl, I started having accidents while relaxing or sleeping so the doctor put me on medicine I eat like a treat everyday to help and so far I haven't had an accident yet! I enjoy going for walks and walk well if I am wearing a gentle leader, if I am not wearing one I will pull you all over so I can sniff all the smells. Because of my few quirks I should have an experienced owner who can be patient with me. I am a great listener when you are able to get my attention but my attention is usually on the squirrel two houses down and not on mom and dad. If you don't mind a little drool, have no kitties/small critters, and you are an experienced dog owner with a fenced in yard, and don't mind a 73lbs doggy on your lap I may be your girl. I should go to a home with at least one other dog as I really trust other dogs more than humans right now, but I’m starting to open up to my foster parents and getting more brave every day. I love to play with other dogs, and would love have home with a dog who loves to play as much as I do. I am crate and potty trained. My foster parents have 3 small grandkids and I don’t mind when they pet me as long as them move slowly when approaching me. I would love to have a big back yard where I can run and play. I would need a fence as if I get frightened I might try and run away. I’m not comfortable on a leash yet, but I’m a smart dog, so once I feel safe you would be able to teach me how to walk on a leash. I would love to be in a home where someone is around most of the time to work with me and help me come out of my shell. Please consider making me a part of your family, If you have time and patience and I so much love to give. Posted Breed: French Bulldog / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 125. Name: Zeena DOB: 05/04/12 estimated Weight: 35 lbs Adoption Fee: $125 Zeena is a gorgeous girl who is eager to please and has tons of love to give! She was found by her foster mom wandering the streets in pretty rough shape. Since she is so much happier and healthier now, she's so excited about life! Zeena does have a high prey drive and doesn't always do well with small dogs or cats (and is very interested in squirrels/rabbits/etc.). She does have the ability to climb fences (though privacy fences are harder to climb), and has managed to escape her collar/tether multiple times. Zeena will need to be tethered/leashed/fenced WITH supervision because she has the tendancy to chase after things. Zeena is very playful and energetic and would make a good walking/jogging buddy, but needs leash training. She does well with SOME other dogs (she tends to be selective) and really loves to play with them when she finds a dog she can get along well with. I'm not completely sure, but it seems like she does better with male dogs. Because she loves playing so much, she can be vocal, which may sound scary, but it's just her way of being excited! If Zeena is introduced to other dogs, it'll need to be done very slowly. Because she is so selective, it may be best for her to be the only animal in the home. Zeena is crate trained, and knows a few basic commands (sit, recall-her name, wait and stay). Since she's so eager to make her humans happy, given time/patience and some dedicated training, I'm confident that she can learn more! This sweet girl developed some allergies and we have been feeding her Nutro (a limited ingredient diet) which seems to have helped. A 22lb. bag of Nutro is around $50 (should last about a month and a half). She also has some incontinence issues. She does go potty outside, but tends to have accidents inside as well. We've tried several medications for this and she has seen a specialist, but we can't quite pin point the problem. For now, she gets frequent outdoor potty breaks and wears a diaper indoors. Simple solutions diapers are about $11 per 12 pack of diapers (we use roughly a pack per 2-3 weeks, but this may vary depending on how long she's kenneled, how many potty breaks she gets, etc.) Zeena is great with the kids in her foster home (ages 6 and 11) but can be a bit clumsy (and bumps into them-could potentially knock over smaller kids). She also tends to be a jumper when she is excited. Zeena loves to give the kids kisses! I don't let the kids play toys with Zeena as she has shown a bit of gaurding behavior when the kids try to get toys from her. This spitfire of a pup adores a good game of fetch and thoroughly enjoys a few rounds of tug-o-war! She gives the best face kisses you could imagine and absolutely loves to snuggle up into some blankets by her humans after she's been good and tuckered out! Zeena seems to appear larger than she actually is in photos! She's on the smaller side of "medium" and weights just about 35 pounds. Zeena is an incredible girl and will make an amazing companion! Like all of us humans, she's a bit rough around the edges and maybe a little misunderstood. She needs someone who is willing to put in the time and work and be dedicated to her, and in return, she'll give so much love back to you! Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Jindo (Korean) / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 350. Name: Monarch DOB: 11/7/16 estimated Weight: 35 lbs Adoption Fee: $350 Monarch is a sweet young soul, who will need an amazingly patient family. Monarch has a very rough past and because of it, he is easily startled and overall fearful of all that is new. Monarch has opened up so much in his foster home, but any world outside of his foster home or fenced in yard and he quickly feels nothing but fear again. Monarch will need a family who is patient with him as he becomes more brave, and one who will continue slow training. Monarch will also require another dog in the home as a companion animal. If you think Monarch might be the sweet soul you've been searching for, please apply to meet him. From the foster mom: Monarch took several days before he would even come out of his kennel in my home. Now that he is out, he is thriving and really loves the attention of my Labrador. He follows him around and loves to play with him. Monarch still needs training, but mostly because he is not yet confident in himself to learn new things. A good example of this, he has not been reintroduced to a leash for walks yet or the car because his last encounters were fearful encounters. Monarch is such a sweet boy and will make a family very happy, but he does need a patient and understanding home.
