Posted Breed: Shepherd. For more information about adopting this animal from us, please click here. My name is Chopper which sounds tough, but I'm a big Noodle. When you call my name I'll look at you with one ear floppy just like in my photo. I have the brain and energy of a Shepherd - I'm just over half of one! The rest of me is pure American mutt. I'm about a year old and have a lot of energy to chase balls and frisbees (and bunnies if you give me half a chance), but tug is my one true love. I'm a super smart boy who loves to work and learn new things. If you ask me, "You wanna work?" I'll offer you a nice sit to say YES PLEASE. I already know Sit, Down (lie down), Off, Paw, Touch, Leave It, Drop It, Take It, Get It, Crate!, Free, and am working on a loose leash Heel. I respond well to marker training (Yes!) and am a double-currency dog, willing to work for treats and play. While you're teaching me, I'll look at you as if you're the most interesting thing in the whole world. I'm trying to figure out what you'll ask me for next! When we're out on walks I still want to explore with my whole body and use my voice to tell strangers to stay away. Kids on bikes are especially scary! I have some doubts about big Halloween decorations too, but I'm learning to be more confident. Another thing I'm learning is that when people or things pass by the front door, that's not always wanted! If you say, "Let's check it out!" I'll turn to you for your opinion. If you say "False Alarm!" I'll believe you most of the time. I can't wait to meet you and work together! I'm a little shy at first but I'll be super affectionate once we get to know each other a little. Like maybe a whole day. Let's be friends! Love, Chopper.

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
