Description
Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (medium coat). Abby (SC) is a female Hound mix who was estimated by our veterinary partner to be 1 year old at the time of intake in July 2023, and only 33 pounds. She was found wandering and standing on a road with skin blackened and thickened from mange, underweight, and in rough shape. She has since been with our veterinary partner and has received treatment. Her fur is growing back in nicely, and although she still has a little ways to go yet in continuging to get her fur back, she is ready for her forever home! Abby (SC) is good with people and other dogs, and she seems okay with cats. She is a sweet girl, our veterinary partner said there she is timid at first, but that lasts about 30 seconds before she becomes very social. She is great on leash, but may not be ideal for busy, noisy city life. May be better suited to suburbs or rural areas. She is crate trained, and would be fine with older kids. She is great with both dogs and cats at the vet. We can, however, provide transport support for pets in foster at a considerable distance from the adopter.

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
