Etta Mae is a sweet and active middle aged (maybe 8 yrs old) Treeing Walker Coonhound. She is such an easy girl to care for and is looking for a home that can walk her regularly or has a high fenced yard to exercise. Her Foster Mom owns Pointers and she keeps right up with them when running and playing. Another playful companion dog would be ideal for Etta Mae in her forever home. She has been fully vetted including a dental to remove several bad teeth. Her new family will need to be diligent with annual dental checkups in addition to routine vetting. Fully crate and house trained, Etta Mae would be fine with a family or individual who have working hours but are still willing to make her the center of their lives. She is currently fostered through a Gentle Jake's Foster Home in Ohio, USA. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Meet Gretchen! Such a smart girl! Gretchen loves to learn and please her people. She is a very quick study and learns new commands with ease. Gretchen has very good leash manners and responds very well using a Gentle Leader head halter for walking. She will walk right beside you with a loose leash or just in front of you, sniffing around. She loves to meet new people on her walks and gets excited to introduce herself to all who allow it. Meeting other dogs on leash isn't her favourite thing however she does walk well beside her hound foster siblings. She loves visits to the dog park where she can run and play with other dogs of her size. Gretchen enjoys the company of another dog of similar size to run and play with, or just hang out. She would also be fine with being your only pet. She will not do well in a home with cats, small dogs (under 15lbs or small critters). Gretchen is about 5 years young and 65 pounds. She's fairly quiet and easygoing inside the home. She enjoys watching comings and goings outside of the home. Lounging in a sunny spot is her favourite thing to do. She has always been very happy and excited to meet all the people who have come into the house. Gretchen is very gentle will little people and just loves them. She will sleep soundly all night in her crate if that is where you prefer she sleep, or left loose in the home she may choose a dog bed, sofa or join you in your bed if you invite her. She doesn't require crating as she is not destructive in the home. Gretchen is very affectionate and likes to be close to her people. She always likes to be in the same room as you, and will find a dog bed or lay at your feet while you relax. In her foster home, although allowed, Gretchen chooses not to go on any furniture. She will frequently squirm around on the ground and expose her belly, looking for a good chest and belly scratch. Gretchen is playful and loves her rope toys and Nylabones. None of that puppy energy though...Lots of naps in between throwing her rope toy around and going for her daily walk. If you would like to chat about Gretchen, please fill out our online application form. This does not commit you in any way but does help us to access fit. Found roaming and fending for herself and her lone young puppy in the fall 2017, they were both rescued and brought to a Kentucky shelter. Sadie presented with a badly damaged hind leg. Once Sadie was settled into her foster home, it was determined that she had likely been suffering with a torn ACL for at least 6 months. Sadie has had her ACL repair surgery had has come through with flying colours. Her vet is very pleased with her recovery and has given her the green light to play freely in the yard with her foster siblings. She will benefit from glucosamine supplements her entire life. Sadie is about 2 years old and 52 pounds. She is loving, cuddly and has a hilarious personality. She is doing great with her leash training and basic commands. She LOVES to sniff everything. No cats or small furry critters please. Sadie loves her crate and will retreat there just to relax through the day. She will sleep up to 10 hours a night in her crate with no complaints. Posted Breed: Bluetick Coonhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Oh Miss Polly! What a sweetheart you are! Polly is a small, pure-bred (with papers) Bluetick Coonhound, she's 2 1/2 years old and weighs about 40lbs. She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Polly came to us as an owner surrender, as she didn't have the personality to hunt. She spent the first 2 years of her life tied up outside with very little socialization. Polly's foster home has this to share about her... Polly has come a long way in the 7 months she has been with us. She has shown us that she can be very playful with other dogs and is indifferent with cats. She enjoys visits to the dog park, and is cautiously curious exploring while she's there, often checking back in with us while she plays. Polly is an excellent passenger in the car and get's very excited when her leash comes out because that means fun is on the horizon! She is working on her leash manners but will need continued training and positive reinforcement in this area. Polly is house trained and loves her crate. She is non-destructive in the house and is just now figuring out bones and tartar knuckles. She does enjoy pulling socks out of the laundry basket from time to time. Polly is an absolute sweetheart and has started showing affection to her foster family. She will moan and groan to tell you how happy she is when she lays with you. Polly has a reserved and cautious personality but shows no fear aggression or resource guarding. When nervous she will retreat to her comfort spots in the home. She is not a fence climber but will require a fenced yard for her safety. Min 5 feet is recommended. A few words from Polly... Hi! I want you to know that I'm a really lucky girl! My foster family has helped me so much since they took me in. I was living outside on a chain and didn't have anyone to tell me I was going to be ok when I heard loud noises or saw things that looked scary to me. I hadn't met too many people before either so I am still learning that new people are ok and won't cause me harm. I don't think a family with small children will be a good fit for me. I find them to be a little loud and super fast moving sometimes, which makes me nervous. I definitely need a home with another dog who can show me the ropes when I'm unsure. I need my new family to be patient with me and understand that I will need time to decompress when I get to your home. What I have to give you in return will be well worth the wait. xoxo Polly. Posted Breed: Beagle / Foxhound / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Meet Barney! Barney is an extremely sweet, laid-back, 6 yr old Beagle/Foxhound cross with a ton of personality! Barney loves to cuddle and relax in the house just as much as he loves exploring the outdoors. He is very quiet in the house, and only occasionally lets out a brief beautiful bay when he's outdoors and hears the loud sound of a motorcycle or truck going past. Barney is truly amazing because he can do it all and he happens to be blind! Barney is independent with everything and doesn't require special handling! He taps on the door to go out, runs up and down the stairs, leads the pack on walks, and is a great jogging partner. Barney is currently working to reduce his waistline, but does not have any health issues. His current weight is 66 pounds and he's working to get down around 50 pounds. He is hoping to find an adopter who is committed to his ongoing fitness and who has the willpower to resist his begging for treats. Barney has a short but solid stature (like a Bassett hound) and therefore cannot counter surf-- though he will set himself up to catch anything that happens to fall in his general direction. Barney loves to be near his humans and will stand next to you for as long as you will pet him; he would make a wonderful therapy dog for this reason, as well as for his good-natured disposition. We are recommending kids over the age of 10 for a couple of reasons. If Barney smells food, he may not be able to tell the difference between food that has been dropped on the floor and free for the taking, vs, in a small child's hands, which could cause an unintended bite. Also, small children tend to have more toys and such laying around on the floor, which can be a hazard for Barney. Barney is great with laid back/submissive dogs and friendly cats. As is common with blind dogs, a more boisterous or dominant dog's movements can be misinterpreted by Barney. He would be fine as your only pet too. Barney is crate trained but only uses it to keep him safe when the dogs in the foster home are being fed. When no one is home, Barney has been left to roam with his foster siblings without any issues, and when you return he is the first to greet you at the door with a happily wagging tail and a big broad smile. Barney is looking for a special family that will love him and accept him for the wonderful dog that he is. Could that be you? A note about Barney's vision loss....Barney lost his vision due to Juvenile Cataracts. There are no surgical options for correction in his case, and he is completely blind. He requires daily eye drops which cost $20 per month. Barney will also require an annual check up with a veterinary Opthalmologist. Please Note: We are all volunteers and busy taking care of our foster dogs so please take the time to fill out our on-line adoption application if you are interested in more information about any of the hounds that we have for adoption. This sweet boy was rescued from what we call Hound Hell. We are guessing he's lived his life in a rabbit hutch as so many hounds do down South. He came to us so over stimulated by this big world around him he literally crawled the walls. He was so emaciated he looked like a skeleton with skin. Bosco is a 1 year old Black and Tan Coonhound. He's the sweetest boy you'll ever meet. He loves kids and definitely would like a few of his own. Bosco would do well with a tolerant fur sibling or as your one and only baby. Bosco is fostering in the WNY area and is in search of the perfect hound family.

She is great with people, other dogs, and loves dog-friendly cats( well actually she loves all cats, but not all cats are happy with her) Indie is an approximately 5 year old, 48 lb hound/boxer cross. She was sadly released to rescue as her owner spent more and more time travelling for his job and he felt she deserved more people time and exercise than he was able to give. Indie is learning to coexist nicely with the senior dogs in her foster home, as well as the cats. She has learned dropped food is not necessarily hers. She loves to go for long walks. She loves to be outside and often gets the "zoomies" in the fenced yard, so could knock over a young child or senior with mobility issues. Indie is a great dog who wants to please (and snuggle). Dogs, big kids, even little kids but sometimes the little ones get exited and scare me which makes me nervous. I know my basic commands like sit and stay. My foster parents say I'm a really fast learner. I like being outside a lot and have learned that if I come when I hear a “click” ( from a clicker) that I get a treat. Boy do I love my treats! I love my foster family very much but hope I can find my forever home soon. A few words from my foster parents... Angel is a very sweet girl and will capture your heart quickly. She is house training well, learning fast by watching our other dog. She is shy at first, but once she warms up she is a bundle of joy. Angel is well on her way to being clicker trained and is food motivated and eager to please. She will do great with other dogs (not good with cats or small critters), and children, however she can get nervous when around toddlers as their loud noises and quick movements spook her. She is crate trained and knows the command “crate” to go in. She will amaze you. She is incredibly good around food. Although she'll go for a treat any time, she keeps her distance and stays quiet while we eat at the dinner table. She will do well in a household who enjoys being outside. Angel has lots of love to give. She loves snuggles after a long day! When her business was closing she said if a rescue didn't take him she was going to have him put to sleep. We could not let this happen to such a wonderful boy! He is now in a foster home waiting for a family to call his own. He is a good dog, knows basic obedience commands, and is cr ate trained and house trained. Floyd is quite an active and energetic boy. He acts like a much younger dog! Floyd is a scent hound and he loves to chase chipmunks and squirrels. He does not do well with cats. A fenced yard for him to run around in would be ideal. I'm 10 years old, 80 pounds, house trained, happy to live with or without other dogs (no cats), non destructive and quiet. I am perfectly content to lay on the floor at your feet, or, if you are willing I also love to lay on or beside you on the couch. Nothing in life excites me more than you coming from work and saying hello and giving me some love, except maybe food. I love food and treats and will give you the best sad puppy dog eyes I can so you will give me some. Foster Momma says I’m on a diet! She also has me on a yummy supplement that makes my joints feel better..... I guess I just have to trust her and know that she has my best interest at heart. My Vet says my teeth are pretty worn down (I mean I’m 10, what do they expect?), but I still chew my food just fine. Vet also says I have a grade 2 murmur but that I should just say NO to drugs at this point. If you think you would like to give an old man like me a chance to be your biggest admirer please put in an app. Don’t forget to ask for Edgar! Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound (short coat). Adoption Fee: 400.00. Mary is a 3 year old Treeing Walker Coonhound, weighing 53lbs. What's not to love about Mary or May-May as she is affectionately nicknamed by her foster family. She's smart and goofy and oh so beautiful!!! Mary came to Gentle Jakes in January after being seized from a hoarding situation. But to our surprise, she seems quite adjusted and does not have some of the typical characteristics of dogs that come from those types of situations. She does well with other dog s, cats, and kids. She can eat alone in her kennel or with the pack. She can sometimes be a little protective over her food and toys but other times, not care at all. She plays well with our dogs and loves to run. Her favourite are stuffed toys, but needs to be monitored because she has been known to "unstuff" a few. Mary needs to have a fenced in yard where she can free play and I do believe she would make an excellent jogging partner. She loves exploring new places and is very respectful while on leash with only occasional correction needed for pulling. Although Mary can have moments of puppy-like energy, she can hold down a couch or dog bed with the best of them! Mary is trying very hard to learn the rules of the house and has come a long way in a short time. She is no longer having accidents in the house and is learning to tell me she has to go potty. She is also learning simple commands such as "sit" and "stay". Mary much prefers to have roam of the house when we're away, but does ok in her kennel when necessary. She does occasionally display some signs of anxiety, barking, when her person leaves the home, but settles in a short time and rests peacefully until we return. For that reason, We do believe Mary would do best with another dog in the home so she is not too dependent on her person for comfort. Mary's foster Mom says "Mary is one of the kindest, goofiest gals I have come across. She makes us smile and laugh daily and always knows when we need some comfort. She loves to push against our legs, almost as if she's hugging us!" Mary is up to date on all vaccines, including Canine Influenza. She is heartworm and tick borne disease negative and receives heartworm, intestinal parasite, flea and tick prevention monthly. Mary also receives a daily preventative joint supplement.
