Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (short coat). I’m a very special boy who has already become a shelter favorite with everyone he meets! Though I might be a little older than your average shelter doggie, I have personality for days! When I first arrived at Second Chance, I was missing most of my fur from a skin infection, and was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. A few more tests determined that I’m actually Cushings free! I do have a little bit of arthritis in my spine and right knee, and seem to be mostly deaf, but I get around just fine, and manage very well with an anti-inflammatory. Now that my skin feels better, my beautiful white locks are coming back in, making me extra handsome! I know once you meet me you’ll see for yourself- I am a perfect little guy, who’s looking for his perfect human! Age: 10 years, Weight: 12.6 pounds ADOPTION PROCESS: If you are interested in adopting an animal from Second Chance SPCA, you will need to come to our adoption center during business hours. ADOPTION FEES: $250 for puppies under 6 months of age and $200 for dogs older than 6 months; Includes spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, fecal and heartworm test. A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog / Mixed (short coat). Hello there, my name is Ella! I'm a stunning Catahoula mix who was found as a stray and brought into my local shelter last September, where I sat for months waiting for someone to come and pick me up. No one ever came for me, so Second Chance took me in hopes that I might find a new home with them. A lovely lady with the same name as me once said, "It isn't where you came from, it's where you're going that counts" - and I tend to agree with her! I'm looking for a new home where I can live out the rest of my days, playing and going for walks all the time. I hope that my new family understand my breed - we Catahoulas aren't fans of other dogs, and sometimes we do best without small children in the home. But I do very well on a leash, and I'm completely house trained; plus I'm very loyal to my people and I love to play with toys. I know the right family is out there for me - if you think that might be you, will you please come and take me home today? Weight: 62 pounds ADOPTION PROCESS: If you are interested in adopting from Second Chance SPCA, please come to our adoption center during business hours. Appointments are not required. Adopters will visit with an adoption counselor and complete a short application. Adopters must live within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and be at least 21 years old. Renters must provide proof of pet deposit and/or written permission by landlord to have a pet. ADOPTION FEES: Includes spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, fecal, and heartworm test (dogs) or FeLV/FIV test (cats). Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). I didn't have the best past, but now that I'm here I know I'll have a bright future! I came to Second Chance as a skinny guy, but now that I've gained weight, I'm ready to go home with a forever family who will understand me. I would like to be your only dog, because I seem to have had bad experiences with dogs in the past, and I'm not sure how I feel about them now. But in return for your undivided attention, I will be the best dog you've ever had! All I want to do is cuddle and give slobbery kisses to everyone I meet. I'm quiet, friendly, laid-back and playful. I take treats like a gentleman, and I'm very handsome. When you talk to me, my head tilts back and forth while I try to decipher what you're saying. I hope you come and see me, so I can hear you say "I'm ready to take you home, Travis!" Won't you make my wishes come true, and adopt me today? Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Hello human, I'm so excited to meet you! My name is Riley and I'm a very happy, wiggly little puppy whose tail is always wagging. I have huge ears that don't seem to fit my face and I almost look like a little mouse. I love to play (and play and play...), just like any puppy, so I hope that my new family likes to play, too. I need some help learning my basic manners and house training, but I'm really eager to please and I'll do anything for my people! I seem to get along with other dogs, and I'm young enough to learn to get along with kitties, too. I am a little nibbly, so small children might not be the best fit for me, but that's a common puppy habit that I'm sure to grow out of eventually. So if you're looking for a puppy to add to your life, consider picking me: I promise I'll be your best friend forever! Second Chance took me in and nursed me back to health, so now I'm all ready for a new home! In my time here, the volunteers have found that I'm pretty good with other dogs - especially small ones, like me - and I don't think I mind cats, either. I'm not a puppy anymore, and although I still have my playful moments, I think my ideal family would be easy-going like I am. I sure would like a family that includes another dog friend, too. So if your pace isn't always the fastest, and you like to snuggle up on the couch, I'm totally your girl. Why don't you adopt me today so we can snuggle tonight?
