Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 300. Meet Private First Class Riker! He is an almost 2 year old shepherd mix. We believe him to be mostly Dutch Shepherd, which is a smart, curious, energetic and smart breed. Did we mention he’s smart? And energetic? He is both. Riker has been in his foster home for several months now, and he’s learned so many things! He is, after all, smart. He also has a high drive and has done incredibly well in his training courses. His new family will find it easy to continue his training, since Riker enjoys it so much and is so eager to learn. He loves to impress his people and wants to please you. Riker weighs in at about 80lbs, and is a naturally thin and muscular boy. He is very handsome and is sure to up your cool factor when you're seen with him. Riker has done well with all the dogs he’s met, but we recommend no very small dogs and no cats, as he does have a high drive. He has also been good with kids, though with his energetic nature and large size, we think kids over 10 would be best for him. Riker loves to play with toys and thinks tug is the best game in the world. He is looking for a family who will be both patient and firm with him, someone who will teach him and play with him in equal parts. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
