Description
Dog Breed: Pekingese (long coat). Pika Pika is an energetic, happy 2-year-old Pekingese who weighs about 10 lbs. As you can see from her photos, she is missing one eye but that does not hold this little girl back. Her favorite activity is dragging dog beds around the house, and then rolling in and under the dog beds. If you know the Pekingese breed, these rolling and "redecorating" activities are most likley familar to you. Pika Pika is shy when meeting new people (particularly men), but once she’s comfortable, her puppy-like personality shines. She loves to play with the other small dogs in her foster mom’s home. We prefer her adopter have experience with the Pekingese breed and be aware of how important it is to keep her safe so nothing happens to her good eye. She is doing well with house training and leash walking, but loud noises or strange objects can startle her on walks and she will balk. Pika Pika will do best in a home with another small social dog, preferably Pekingese, so she can continue to watch and learn from the other dog. She walks best when she’s with a social doggie companion. She is VERY fast shooting out the door, can jump high and gets really fired up doing yard and house zoomies, especially in the afternoon and evening before dinner and "sofa-time." Her foster mom can barely get meals ready fast enough for her. Pika Pika tries to help by demand-barking, but if that doesn't work, then bed dragging is her second choice. WE REQUIRE AN ALL-ADULT HOME WITH A SECURELY FENCED YARD. The secure fence must be 4ft or higher, gaps no larger than 1 1/2 inches, which is attached to the home. An invisible fence, enclosed patio or terrace without grass, temporary fencing, dog pens or dog lots or community shared fencing (dog park) are NOT considered secure fencing. If your fencing has "puppy pickets" (or is supplemented with garden fencing) it needs to be at least 36 inches high from the ground up AT THE LOWEST POINT. No exceptions. The adoption range for this dog is limited to NC, SC, VA and East TN. If you are interested in adopting this dog, contact h2hadoptionsgmail. There is an application process and adoption fee. We are an all-volunteer organization, and in addition to saving dogs, we have other responsibilities, so we appreciate your patience and understanding during this process. Response time can take up to 5 business. Please inquire only if you are willing to come to Greensboro, NC to meet the dog after we schedule your home visit. We do not ship dogs or put them on transports. Veterinary Care: All Hart-2-Heart Rescue foster dogs are spayed/neutered, current on heartworm prevention, parvo/distemper, bordetella, and rabies vaccines, and are professionally groomed and microchipped. As needed, our foster dogs have teeth cleanings, extractions, bloodwork and other diagnostic testing. Adoption Fee: $500

Overview:
The Pekingese is a captivating toy breed with a rich history, originating in ancient China where they were revered companions of royalty. Known for their distinctive "lion's mane" and rolling gait, they possess a compact, sturdy body covered in a long, profuse double coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Their most recognizable features include a flat face, large, dark eyes, and a short, broad muzzle. Temperamentally, Pekingese are brave, independent, and surprisingly dignified, often displaying an affectionate but not overly demonstrative loyalty to their owners. They adapt well to apartment living due to their small size and relatively low exercise needs, though they do enjoy short, supervised walks. While generally good with older, respectful children, their independent nature means they might not be the ideal choice for boisterous family environments. Health-wise, their brachycephalic (flat-faced) structure makes them prone to respiratory issues and heatstroke, so vigilance in warm weather is crucial. Overall, the Pekingese is a charming and unique companion for those seeking a devoted, somewhat regal lapdog.
