Dog Breed: Shepherd / Terrier / Mixed. Rowan is a two-year-old German Shepherd mix who is as sweet as he is handsome. He can be a dream to walk on leash, but at times, still needs a little help focusing on his handler. He is 58 lbs and has his basic obedience down. Rowan loves to play and will make a faithful and loving companion for the right person. Rowan is house trained and settles well in a crate. He has excellent house manners, is respectful when his human friends are having their dinner and does not jump on counters. He should receive a gold medal in snuggling! It is undetermined what Rowan thinks about little kids and cats. Furthermore, with additional training and socialization, Rowan’s feelings about other dogs could improve. Right now, he chooses his own friends. At home, Rowan will benefit from mental stimulation in the form of various enrichment activities and boredom busters. He would excel at a variety of dog sports, and a secure backyard will allow him the opportunity to run and burn off extra energy. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
