Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed. At just 3 months old, Rylee is a petite, all-black beauty with a heart full of love and a personality that’s equal parts shy sweetheart and goofy little gremlin (in the best way). She’s been crate trained, listens well on leash, and is working hard to build confidence when home alone — she’s not quite ready to roam freely yet, but she’s getting there! Rylee is a 7 out of 10, on the energy scale: playful and peppy, but not bouncing off the walls. She’s happiest when she’s cuddled up next to you or gnawing on a favorite chew toy, and she adores belly rubs. Once she’s had time to take in her surroundings (she’s a cautious observer at first), she’ll burst into play with surprising zoomies and delight — especially if there’s another dog around to chase or charm! In foster care, she’s been wonderful with dogs, cats, and kiddos — a gentle girl with a soft soul. Loud noises and aggressive energy can spook her, so she’d thrive in a calm home with a confident dog friend to help her blossom. She’s more of a “short nature stroll” kind of pup than a rugged trailblazer, but she’s always up for exploring at her own pace. Rylee is the kind of pup who’ll quietly win your heart — an “introverted extrovert” who plays hard to get with other dogs and melts into your lap once she knows she’s safe. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
