Meet Charlie, part of our sweet litter of 8 Shepherd mix puppies born June 15, 2025—4 boys and 4 girls—rescued from a difficult hoarding situation. Their mama, a 10-year-old Shepherd mix, is finally spayed and safe, and now it’s her babies’ turn to find loving families. Sweet, snuggly, and oh-so-loyal, Charlie Boy is the cuddlebug of the litter. While his siblings are busy wrestling and playing, Charlie is mellow and content to be curled up next to his human. He loves water and squeeky toys and is gentle and well mannered. Charlie is extremely smart and eager to please. He's potty trained, kennel trained, sits / lays down for treats and walks on leash well -- still learning, but confident and calm. Whether it’s sitting by your side, napping against your feet, or sleeping right next to you, Charlie just wants to be part of your world. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
