Description
Dog Breed: Hound (medium coat). Oakley (A137641) is a 1-year-old Hound who weighed 62.3 pounds on intake! 08/23/25 Mister Oakley is back at the shelter because his most recent owner was having issues finding housing that would allow him. Oakley was said to be kennel trained and housebroken, and he was said to do well with the small children in the home. That being said, he is a young, exuberant dog that has no body awareness, so he may accidentally knock over kiddos on occasion. Oakley was said to ride well in the car and to know basic sit and stay commands. He has been know to counter surf and scratch occasionally, but was described as generally being an outgoing and affectionate dude. Oakley has not had any experience with dogs or cats in his most recent home. Please continue reading his past bio for his history with these animals. Oakley was said to not do well with small animals, so he should be kept separate from or go to a home without rabbits, guinea pigs or other such small critters. If you are interested in meeting Mister Oakley, give us a call! 02/27/25 This handsome (and talkative) young man is Oakley! Oakley was surrendered to the shelter because his owner was going through some life changes that prevented them from being able to care for him. In his prior home, he was said to do well with babies, children, and adults. He was known to bark at strangers but warms up quickly. Oakley was also said to get along with other dogs but was a bit too curious of cats in the past. He may do best without feline housemates. Please ensure you are always making appropriate introductions with any and all new friends. Oakley was also said to be kennel-trained and housebroken! He is a young dog and would benefit from attending a basic obedience class with a certified trainer. He was known to jump on people, be a chewer, and to get into the trash if unsupervised. It was also noted that Oakley had been hit by a car a couple of months ago, which resulted in a fractured jaw. He is doing well but his vet at the time advised soft food and restricting chewing on toys for up to 6 months after the accident. He was seen by our shelter vet for his neuter, and she said his jaw is looking great! However, she did find that Oakley is having some tummy issues, resulting from giardia. He has been put on a medication regiment to help clear this up. He is a young pup looking for his second chance and home, if you are interested in meeting him, please let us know!

Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
