Dog Breed: Dachshund (long coat). Adoption Fee: $150. Please ensure you understand and can meet the needs of this dog before applying. • Energy level: low/couch potato • Potty training: pee pads • Fenced yard: yes, secured play pen recommended • Shared walls: suitable • People: patient adults only (no children) • Dogs: slow introductions recommended • Other: Peanut is blind due to progressive retina atrophy and needs a special family who can provide patient, gentle care Overview Sweet Peanut is a chocolate and tan longhaired dachshund looking for a patient and understanding family who can appreciate his gentle soul. Peanut is a 5.5-year-old, 13-pound love bug who was turned in due to progressive retina atrophy that has left him blind. We think he may have some hearing loss as well. Despite these challenges, he’s a content little guy who loves nothing more than soaking up sunshine and snuggling on your lap for hours. Environment This couch potato prefers the comfort of indoor life and uses pee pads for his bathroom needs. Peanut would do best with a fenced yard and secured play pen where he can safely enjoy the outdoors. He’s perfectly content being left to his own devices and isn’t noisy, making him suitable for homes with shared walls. We use a pen setup rather than traditional crate training, which works well for him. Health Peanut is currently on gabapentin, trazodone, and Caprovet to help manage anxiety related to his blindness. Hiding medications in his food can be tricky, but with patience, it works out. He can be scared when being picked up due to his inability to see what’s happening, so he may growl and snap initially (though he has never bitten). The key is talking to him throughout any interaction, using a blanket for comfort, and moving slowly. Once he’s settled, he calms down beautifully. Pets & People Peanut needs people who can be patient and willing to take things at his pace. He uses nose bumps to smell and recognize his family members, and we’d suggest no children in his new home. With strangers, he needs very slow introductions—let him smell your fist first and don’t rush to pet him. He’s done fine with other dogs but again, slow introductions at his speed work best. When it comes to mealtime, he loves his breakfast at 6am and dinner at 5pm, though he’s an aggressive eater (a snuffle mat helps slow him down). He tends to ignore treats but enjoys his regular meals. Location Peanut is available for adoption from Dumfries, VA. He travels fine in a crate as long as you talk to him and let him know what’s happening. Please email stacyplittlepawsdr with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above.
