Description
Dog Breed: Anatolian Shepherd (medium coat). For weeks this handsome guy sat at the shelter. We shared but no one wanted to take him home. When we say fostering saves lives we really mean it. Potro was getting so close to never leaving the shelter. Kennel stressed and shutting down...and then his hero came! In foster we've learned Potro does well with female dogs and very confident kitties. He also loves all people. Potro is very strong and needs a bit of work with the leash, he pulls. A harness and some sessions with our behaviorist can fix that! Potro was just neutered and that could easily help with how he feels about other males, time will tell! He's a great boy and is just waiting for someone to see that and give him a chance to be part of their family, forever!

Overview:
The Anatolian Shepherd, an ancient and noble breed, hails from the rugged plains of Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), where they served as formidable guardians of livestock for thousands of years. These impressive dogs are renowned for their substantial size, typically weighing between 80-150 pounds and standing 27-29 inches tall, boasting a dense double coat that can range in color but is often fawn with a black mask. Their independent and intelligent nature makes them exceptional working dogs, displaying a strong protective instinct balanced with a calm demeanor. While fiercely loyal to their families, their guardian roots mean they are not ideal for apartment living; they thrive in homes with ample space and a job to do, making them unsuitable for inexperienced owners. With proper socialization and training, they can be wonderful companions, though their watchful nature means they often bond more closely with one or two family members. Generally a robust breed, potential health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, and bloat.
