Description
Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (medium coat). Cattle Dog mix, female Penny from Berkeley! She's here now and we actually know some of her backstory. Penny is a shy, one- year old female Australian Cattle Dog, owner-surrendered to the shelter on September 20. Penny has been in two homes. Neither a good fit. She was adopted as a puppy by a family with young children, then returned. The kids overwhelmed her. The adopters didn't have a clue about a puppy and their kids. People ask if dogs are ok with kids, but are those kids ok with dogs?! She was later adopted by a kind woman who had her for about a year but, at 87 years old, couldn’t keep up with Penny’s energy and exercise needs. Her original shelter refused to take her back, she was accepted at BACS. It’s clear the recent adopter cared deeply for Penny. This was a difficult decision. She reported that Penny was timid, and underconfident. Penny was at my house for about an hour and we went a on a couple mile hike with 5 other dogs, all off leash. Penny was on a 20 ft. line. She has no reactivity to dogs. And when we returned to the house, a friend was here for a BBQ. Penny had no reaction to him. She seems to be fine with all the people and dogs I have seen her with. Since arriving at BACS 10 days ago, Penny made steady progress. She was scared and needed a few days to decompress. But the dog represented to me, was playing with a 70 lb pit bull. Penny needs a couple minutes to sniff you (while you ignore her), then she will demanding pets and your attention! She is a high energy dog! The hike was fantastic for her to burn off some nervousness and get to know some other dogs she'll be living with while waiting for her forever. We're gonna get it right this time! Penny is affectionate, playful, and ready to thrive in the right environment. Penny is spayed, chipped, and current on vaccinations. She is ready to meet you! Breed overview

Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
