Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Kane (A132230) is a 5-year-old German Shepherd who weighed 83 pounds on intake! 11/04/25 This active boy is Kane! Kane was surrendered to the shelter due to his previous family needing to move and were unable to bring Kane with them. According to his previous owner Kane spends most of his time outside and is crate trained. He will need some guidance on house training and manners in his new home. Kane's previous owners stated that Kane does great with children of all ages and does well meeting new people. He was also said to do well with other dogs, but he can be cautious when meeting cats. Kane knows his basic commands (Sit, Place, Down) and was described as being an outgoing and affectionate dog. He would highly benefit from obedience classes to help him brush up on his skills and practice working on his manners. He can be rough when playing and has been known to jump up on people when he is excited. Although Kane does great with children in general, he is not always aware of his large size and may accidentally bump into or knock smaller children over when he is excited. Please use caution when introducing him to children and other pets in his new home. Kane is a very smart and very active boy that will need plenty of mental and physical stimulation in his new home. If you are interested in meeting with Kane, please let the front desk know!

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
