Meet Mayo, a 3-year-old male Australian Shepherd who is full of energy, playful, and incredibly smart. Mayo has been with his owner for three years after being adopted from a friend. Due to housing changes, he is now looking for a home that can provide him with space, attention, and mental stimulation. About Mayo Breed: Australian Shepherd Age: 3 years Color: Black and brown Gender: Male (not neutered) Vaccines: Not current Potty Trained: No Crate Trained: No Living Situation: Primarily outdoors (4+ hours at a time) Other Pets: Has lived with dogs Behavior & Temperament Children: Friendly Visitors: Welcoming and social Handling/Sharing: Allows people to take food and toys Escape Risk: Occasional fence jumping, will need secure yard Personality: Energetic, intelligent, playful, and eager to learn Reason for Rehoming Owner’s current housing situation cannot accommodate Mayo’s needs. All animals are up-to-date on vaccinations (including rabies if over 4 months old), microchipped, and spayed or neutered. All dogs have been been vaccinated with DHPP and Bordatella (kennel cough) and heartworm tested negative (if over 6 months). All cats have been vaccinated with FVRCP and current on flea control. Overview:
The Australian Shepherd, despite its name, actually originated in the western United States during the 19th century, bred primarily for herding livestock on ranches. These striking dogs are medium-sized with a sturdy build, often sporting captivating merle coats (blue or red) and piercing blue, amber, or marbled eyes, sometimes with two different colors (heterochromia). Known for their exceptional intelligence and high energy, Aussies possess a strong work drive and thrive on having a "job" to do, whether it's agility, obedience, or extensive exercise. Their temperament is generally loyal, affectionate, and good-natured with their families, though they can be reserved with strangers. Due to their high exercise requirements and need for mental stimulation, they are best suited for active families or individuals with ample outdoor space and a commitment to training; apartment living is generally not ideal. Potential owners should also be aware of common health concerns like hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye conditions, including Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
