Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). The Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center has a large number of animals just waiting for adoption. And we receive new "adoptees" every day, so add our website to your "favorites" list and visit us often. .talgov/animals Hi, Iâm Akamaru, a 78-pound guy who was surrendered to the shelter when my previous owners could no longer keep me, and Iâm finding the shelter environment a bit overwhelming. Iâm active and playful but also quiet, independent, and somewhat introverted, and I tend to take my time warming up to new people. Iâm gentle, good on a leash, crate trained, house trained, and I know some basic commands, which makes me a pretty easy companion once Iâm settled. Iâve lived with other dogs and do well with them, but I donât have experience with cats and like to chase them along with birds, so a cat-free home would be best for me. Iâm protective by nature and would do best in an adult-only home that can give me patience, structure, and consistency so I can feel safe, build trust, and show my loyal side.

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
