Description
Dog Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Shyla. This sweet, gentle girl was rescued as a stray, so her early life is unknown to us. Based on her heartworm-positive status and initial lack of socialization, we believe she likely lived a very isolated life, possibly chained or penned outside, with little exposure to the world. When she first arrived, Shyla needed time to heal physically, decompress, and learn how to trust and be part of a family. Shyla has been in her local foster home for several months now and is ready to make her official debut. We had our trainer come in to work with her foster mom, Jamie, to help Shyla build confidence and gently work through fear-based avoidance of everyday routines. Using a slip lead and structured guidance, they focused on things like going outside and coming back in, tasks that once felt overwhelming to her. Shyla has made tremendous progress and now handles these routines with ease. As her confidence has grown, Jamie describes Shyla as a pretty easy pup. She happily romps around the house, gets excited for cookies, meals, sofa time, and bedtime (which, thanks to cookies, is quite the event). She loves her toys and has learned how to be part of a pack. While it took her some time to feel comfortable playing with the other dogs, she’s now enjoying their company and engaging in play. We believe that Shyla truly needs a canine companion. She does best with a confident, social dog she can follow and learn from, ideally a calm to moderate-energy dog similar in size. Shyla has fully embraced the comforts of home and decided that people aren’t so scary after all. She’s house-trained, has earned free-roam privileges, and sleeps in bed with her pack. She enjoys curling up next to her people on the sofa and is very much a “blanket dog,” skilled at burrowing into the covers. She seeks out affection from Jamie and will even approach visiting friends and the dog walker for pets, treats, or not. She’s still cautious around new people, but is clearly much happier and confident now. Leash skills are still a work in progress. Jamie has been walking Shyla in the yard, but hasn’t ventured far from home yet. Shyla is ready for the next step in her journey, and we’re looking for a calm, patient home that will give her time to settle in, continue building confidence, and help her keep moving forward. Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
