Description

Dog Breed: Labrador Retriever (medium coat). Clara (A140983) is a 10-month-old Lab who weighed 38.1 pounds on intake! Foster update 2/24/26: On arrival at the shelter, we found that Clara had a bowel obstruction after eating a sock. She was sent out for surgery and made a full recovery in an amazing foster home. However, it was noted that she will still seek out socks to eat and is a super chewer! Clara was said to break out of wire crates but did well in a ruffland kennel. She was said to be a little ball of energy who loves to play and did great with the foster's dogs and cats. She is also a smart girl who enjoys puzzle toys but does need to be supervised so she does not chew up the toy once completed. Clara has been working on potty training and with plenty of frequent potty breaks has done well. However, she does still ask to go out in the middle of the night if not fully exercised to her liking. Clara is still nervous around strangers, but once she bonds with her person she is very loyal. We recommend that she goes to a home without children due to her habit of eating things she should not. 01/26/26 This shy but friendly pup is Clara! Clara can be quite reserved at first and may take some time to fully warm up. However, once she is comfortable with you, she is stated to be outgoing, friendly, and affectionate! Clara does not have much experience outside her surrendering home, so this is really a whole new world for her. She was said to do well the other dogs in her home, but has not experience around cats or smaller critters. With all new animals, it is important to ensure you are making appropriate introductions. Clara was stated to be crate trained but is not fully housebroken. She is looking for a patient owner who will continue to work with her. She would also benefit from attending a basic obedience class with a certified trainer to continue working on her manners and to continue building her confidence. If you are interested in meeting Clara, please let us know!

Overview:

The Labrador Retriever, a beloved and highly popular breed, originated in Newfoundland, Canada, where they were initially bred to assist fishermen by retrieving nets and stray fish. Physically, they are medium-to-large dogs, known for their strong, athletic build, short, dense, weather-resistant double coat (commonly seen in black, yellow, or chocolate), and their distinctive "otter" tail. Temperamentally, Labs are celebrated for their friendly, outgoing, and good-natured disposition, making them exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please contribute to their trainability, though they do require consistent exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While adaptable, their energy levels make them more suited to homes with yards, or highly active families, rather than apartment living, unless daily extensive exercise is guaranteed. Regarding health, Labs can be prone to certain conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, and some eye conditions, so responsible breeding practices are crucial. Overall, their loyalty, versatility, and affectionate nature firmly establish the Labrador Retriever as a wonderful addition to many households.
