Description

Dog Breed: Dachshund (long coat). Adoption Fee: $250. Please ensure you understand and can meet the needs of this dog before applying. Energy level: medium Potty training: trained Fenced yard: preferred but not required Shared walls: not People: all Dogs: all, loves cats too Other: senior with arthritis and old sternum injury, picky eater, soft food only Overview Looking for a sweet senior companion with plenty of personality? Coco the chocolate and cream dachshund might be your perfect prissy princess. Coco is a precious 13-year-old purebred dachshund with a gorgeous chocolate and cream coat. She weighs about 9 lbs and is working on gaining weight. This gentle girl came to Little Paws when her owner went into hospice care. Despite her senior status, Coco is sweet, gentle, prissy, and still playful! She's got spunk and character, and she'll let you know exactly what she thinks about things. Environment Coco has a medium activity level and enjoys short walks and playtime. She's fully potty trained and loves her walks, doing beautifully on the leash. A fenced yard would be wonderful for her but isn't absolutely necessary if you're committed to regular outdoor time. This chatty girl is quite the conversationalist and isn't suited for homes with shared walls—she likes to make her opinions known! She doesn't love being crated, preferring the comfort of being close to her people. She can be left alone for a little while and does just fine. Coco is wonderful in the car and loves car rides, making her a great travel companion. Pets & People Coco is great with all people and has had no issues with strangers. She's friendly, social, and happy to meet new friends wherever she goes. With other animals, Coco is absolutely delightful. She loves dogs both big and small, and she even lived happily with two cats! Coco is a picky eater with specific dietary needs. She can't eat hard food and will likely need to have all her teeth removed soon, so she requires soft food only. If you keep her food consistent, her sensitive stomach does just fine. Health & Special Needs Coco has arthritis in her hip and an old sternum injury. Sometimes she'll yelp if these areas are touched the wrong way, so she needs gentle handling around those spots. She has a dramatic reaction to having her feet touched—she's not aggressive about it, but she will pout to let you know how she feels! She has a sensitive stomach, but as long as her food stays consistent, she does well. She's currently underweight and working on gaining a healthy amount. Coco also has a grade 1 heart murmur. Her medical needs are manageable with the right care, and she still has so much love and joy to give. A family experienced with senior dogs would be ideal for this special girl. Location Coco is available for adoption from Hendersonville, NC. Please email twoodward77yahoo with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Coco is $250.

Overview:

The Dachshund, affectionately known as the "wiener dog," is a fascinating breed originating in Germany, primarily bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their most distinctive physical characteristic is their long, low-slung body and short, muscular legs, a feature perfectly adapted for tunneling. They come in three coat types – smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired – and various sizes, from miniature to standard. Temperamentally, Dachshunds are known for being courageous, curious, and often quite playful, with a surprising amount of energy. While they are intelligent, their independent nature can make training a delightful challenge. Their small size and relatively low exercise requirements make them well-suited for apartment living, and they can be wonderful companions for families, though early socialization is key, especially with children and other pets. Regarding health, their unique body shape predisposes them to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), so careful handling and weight management are crucial.
