Description
Dog Breed: Australian Shepherd / German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Aussie/Shepherd mix female puppy Princess Leia is a 10 week old Aussie / GSD mix. Mom was a known stray in a rural part of Fresno. Shortly after having pups a Good Samaritan tried bringing her to safety - unfortunately she got away one day and was hit and killed by a car…her pups abandoned at a young age. Leia was the hardest hit by this litter’s skin infection. It’s a non-contagious skin infection but it’ll be a while before all her hair grows back. She’s not feeling sorry for herself. She’s made tremendous progress and shows us daily how resilient dogs can be. She also wanted everyone to know that her transition from a black and tan to a tri color is underway. Little sprouts of white hair are filling in throughout the bare spots and she’s got a tiny white beacon at the tip of her tail. She’s going to be an absolute stunner! What Leia is “lacking” in looks right now, she makes up for in personality. She’s observant, intelligent, snuggly, and loyal. She’s the first to come running when her foster calls, “PUPPIES!” She’s mama’s little helper and oh so sweet with the resident human child. She’s picked her spot in the yard to go potty and is really consistent. She also adores the big dogs on-site. She is microchipped, dewormed, on a vaccine schedule, and can go home on a spay contract. She’ll be ready to fly in another week or two (max). We don’t want pups growing up in rescue. Leia is in Arroyo Grande, CA. Overview:
The Australian Shepherd, despite its name, actually originated in the western United States during the 19th century, bred primarily for herding livestock on ranches. These striking dogs are medium-sized with a sturdy build, often sporting captivating merle coats (blue or red) and piercing blue, amber, or marbled eyes, sometimes with two different colors (heterochromia). Known for their exceptional intelligence and high energy, Aussies possess a strong work drive and thrive on having a "job" to do, whether it's agility, obedience, or extensive exercise. Their temperament is generally loyal, affectionate, and good-natured with their families, though they can be reserved with strangers. Due to their high exercise requirements and need for mental stimulation, they are best suited for active families or individuals with ample outdoor space and a commitment to training; apartment living is generally not ideal. Potential owners should also be aware of common health concerns like hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye conditions, including Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
