Description
Dog Breed: Pekingese. Please contact Rose (japchinrosegmail) for more information about this pet. Summer came from a bad backyard breeder/puppy mill. Fortunately, she is doing well in her foster home and learning how to be a house dog. She is around 10 lbs and only about 18 months old, so learning things fast! Summer can be a bit shy around new people, but she bonds very quickly with people she knows. She follows her foster mom all over the house and likes other dogs and the cats. She is surprisingly agile for a Pekingese and likes to jump on the back of the chair to look outside. Her housebreaking is going very well, and she hasn't had an accident since her first day. She sleeps all night in her crate with no accidents, but wants you to be outside with her when she goes potty. Summer is still learning how to walk on a leash, so a fenced yard might be better for her to go potty. Like all flat-faced dogs, she will need her wrinkles kept clean and wiped so the hairs don't irritate her eyes. Summer loves to sit next to you when you work, so someone home during most of the day or works from home would be ideal. Summer is learning about toys and chew toys, but mostly just likes being near you. Also, did I mention she snores? To help cover vet bills and care (transportation, food, toys, etc.), a $425 donation is requested at the time of adoption. All of our adoptions are contingent upon an approved application, a home visit, a reference check, an obedience training agreement, and the signing of the adoption contract. All our dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before adoption. Our dogs are companion animals that live indoors as part of your family. Please do not apply if your plan is to keep them outside, in a garage, a porch, or a kennel. We do not ship dogs. All of our dogs are in private foster homes. We are not a shelter with hours. A visit can be arranged after an adoption questionnaire has been filled out and sent in. Please try to email first. We are all volunteers that work so we can not easily take or make phone calls.

Overview:
The Pekingese is a captivating toy breed with a rich history, originating in ancient China where they were revered companions of royalty. Known for their distinctive "lion's mane" and rolling gait, they possess a compact, sturdy body covered in a long, profuse double coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Their most recognizable features include a flat face, large, dark eyes, and a short, broad muzzle. Temperamentally, Pekingese are brave, independent, and surprisingly dignified, often displaying an affectionate but not overly demonstrative loyalty to their owners. They adapt well to apartment living due to their small size and relatively low exercise needs, though they do enjoy short, supervised walks. While generally good with older, respectful children, their independent nature means they might not be the ideal choice for boisterous family environments. Health-wise, their brachycephalic (flat-faced) structure makes them prone to respiratory issues and heatstroke, so vigilance in warm weather is crucial. Overall, the Pekingese is a charming and unique companion for those seeking a devoted, somewhat regal lapdog.
