Description
Dog Breed: Pekingese (medium coat). Winky is a 2 year old pekingese that was rescued from a yucky backyard breeder situation in Arkansas. Despite a rough start in life, she is an absolute DELIGHT. She is still learning how to be in a home and is very puppy-like exploring everything. She is incredibly agile for a peke and loves her toys and her foster siblings. Winky is about 10lbs. She is scared/timid around men. Winky is getting the hang of crate training for meals and when the foster mom has to be away from the home, but is doing great. Potty training is still a work in progress, but if she has other resident dogs to help show her the ropes that will make the transition easier for her in her forever home. Winky currently shares the bed with everyone at night and does not have accidents overnight, or when left in her kennel. Her foster mom works from home a few days a week and is able to let dogs out over lunch on office days. This seems to work well for Winky, but she would do well in a number of home situations. Winky is a bit of a velcro dog and loves to follow her foster mom everywhere and tends to be underfoot - so she is a bit of a tripping hazard! Winky would prefer a home with another dog companion. She has not been around cats, but does chase the resident chickens quite a bit, so cats might be a no go for her. Unless your cat likes to play with dogs. A fenced yard is required for Winky. Winky does have a congenital eye disorder called Microphthalmia. Her left eye is essentially non-functioning, but is currently healthy. If she develops eye infections in the future she might need to have the eye removed, but lots of dogs with this condition do not need further intervention until later in life when glaucoma or other issues that tend to arise. To help pay for vet bills and care (transportation, food, toys, etc..) a $450 donation is requested at the time of adoption. All of our adoptions are contingent upon an approved application, home visit, reference check, obedience training agreement, and signing of adoption contract. All our dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before adoption. Our dogs are companion animals that live indoors as part of your family. Please do not apply if your plan is to have them as outside dogs, garage dogs, porch dogs or outside kennel dogs. We do not ship dogs. All of our dogs are in private foster homes. We are not a shelter with hours. A visit can be arranged after an adoption questionnaire has been filled out and sent in. Please try to email first. We are all volunteers that work so we can not easily take or make phone calls.

Overview:
The Pekingese is a captivating toy breed with a rich history, originating in ancient China where they were revered companions of royalty. Known for their distinctive "lion's mane" and rolling gait, they possess a compact, sturdy body covered in a long, profuse double coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Their most recognizable features include a flat face, large, dark eyes, and a short, broad muzzle. Temperamentally, Pekingese are brave, independent, and surprisingly dignified, often displaying an affectionate but not overly demonstrative loyalty to their owners. They adapt well to apartment living due to their small size and relatively low exercise needs, though they do enjoy short, supervised walks. While generally good with older, respectful children, their independent nature means they might not be the ideal choice for boisterous family environments. Health-wise, their brachycephalic (flat-faced) structure makes them prone to respiratory issues and heatstroke, so vigilance in warm weather is crucial. Overall, the Pekingese is a charming and unique companion for those seeking a devoted, somewhat regal lapdog.
