Description
Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (medium coat). Allie was one of five dogs from one home recently brought to the shelter for rehoming, Because we are not familiar with their background, we are doing our best to start from scratch with personality assessments and get an idea of best fit for placement. Of the five dogs, she is the one that is a scaredy-cat and is having a difficult time adapting to the shelter environment. We were able to move her kennel run to the front to make it less frightening for her to leave the kennel. We also introduced her to an older confident puppy, and that has made a big difference in her wish to socialize. She will need a patient adopter, a fenced yard, and another dog to really feel good about the changes in her life. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
