Overview:
The Pekingese is a captivating toy breed with a rich history, originating in ancient China where they were revered companions of royalty. Known for their distinctive "lion's mane" and rolling gait, they possess a compact, sturdy body covered in a long, profuse double coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting. Their most recognizable features include a flat face, large, dark eyes, and a short, broad muzzle. Temperamentally, Pekingese are brave, independent, and surprisingly dignified, often displaying an affectionate but not overly demonstrative loyalty to their owners. They adapt well to apartment living due to their small size and relatively low exercise needs, though they do enjoy short, supervised walks. While generally good with older, respectful children, their independent nature means they might not be the ideal choice for boisterous family environments. Health-wise, their brachycephalic (flat-faced) structure makes them prone to respiratory issues and heatstroke, so vigilance in warm weather is crucial. Overall, the Pekingese is a charming and unique companion for those seeking a devoted, somewhat regal lapdog.
