Description
Dog Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (short coat). Location: Doswell, VA Meet Phelps !! Are you looking for your next outdoor adventure buddy? Because this 2 year old cattle dog is it ! Phelps is a very friendly neutered male with a great temperament ! He’s full of life but can also have a good off switch if he’s been worked mentally and physically. The scoop on Phelps - He’s house trained and kennel trained. He’s very friendly with people including strangers. He’s dog friendly but is still learning to politely introduce himself and read other dogs when they’re not interested. He’s been exposed to cats and chickens. He could successfully live with cats (continuing to work on impulse control to not chase). He could successfully live around chickens but he’s currently still leashed and under constant supervision. He’s still learning to walk loosely on a leash - we’ve made huge improvements here. He has a decent recall, knows sit, down, place, kennel, “enough” - stop playing with another dog/stop what you’re doing, sits and waits at doors and gate thresholds. He’s very food and toy driven. He enjoys tug, frisbee and chuck it ball. We’ve worked on when he can grab the toy held in hand, go chase the toy and drop it verbally. No signs of resource guarding with people or dogs but with dogs we take precautions like feeding meals in a kennel, every dog has their own toy and is not allowed to take anothers. He’s fully vetted. He’s good for baths and decent with nail trims - lots of breaks between clipping toes and treats. He’s great in the car kennel.-quite and patient for traveling. He can get overstimulated by fast and loud vehicles driving by. He use to chase but we’ve made huge progress on this. While he can handle exposure / walking in busier areas he wouldn’t do well living closing to busy roads. Phelps is a cattle dog through and through - he’s very driven, learns quickly and could easily outsmart someone not prepared for his quick thinking. He would do best in a home that’s very active (not just a weekend warrior!). that can work him mentally daily and is away from the busy city life. He can be a busy body so would do better with older children. He can live with other dogs but a meet and greet would be required. Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
