Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Thor (A122229) is a 7-year-old pittie mix who weighed nearly 90 lbs at intake! 05/09/26 This handsome guy is Thor! Thor arrived at the shelter as a stray and was not picked up by any owner. Thor has been to the shelter quite a bit over the years, so his next home should be vigilant about keeping him contained. Keeping him on a secure tie-out, within a fenced in yard, or secured by a leash will be important as he adjusts to a new home and routine. Thor does lack basic leash manners and we have found that he walks best when he has a toy to hold in his mouth. We do not know how Thor feels about other dogs or animals, so please use caution if planning to introduce him to any. We also recommend slow introductions to kiddos because Thor is such a large dog and does not understand his size all the time. He can be a bit mouthy when in play mode which is something to be aware of. Thor has done well with keeping his kennel clean while at the shelter, indicating he may be housebroken. If you are interested in meeting Thor, please give us a call!

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
