Hi, I’m Koda , a 5½-year-old black German Shepherd weighing about 85 lbs, and I’m ready to find my forever home! I’m house-trained, crate-trained (though I don’t need one), and very well-behaved—you can leave me alone for hours without worry, but I much prefer spending time with my humans. I rarely bark, respond well to commands after three weeks of professional training, and am easy to care for. I love playing catch, going for walks, and being part of the family. I’m great with kids and have a gentle, kind nature, though I do best with proper introductions to other dogs. While I may look strong and majestic, I’m actually a bit shy and incredibly sweet—the nicest dog you could meet. I’m fully vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to join a loving family. I'm not yet neutered, but will be before I go to my new family. If you’d like to meet me, I’m available in the San Diego area—please contact my foster Mom Deb at 619-415-5052 (call or text).

Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
