Description
Dog Breed: Mastiff (medium coat). Mitch (A142268) is a 5-year-old Mastiff who weighed 103.2 pounds on intake! 06/02/26 This big boy is Mitch! Mitch arrived at the shelter as a stray and is now looking for his new place to call home! He is a quite the dog and is looking for an owner who can love him and continue working with him. As he was a stray, we do not know if he has experience around children or other animals. He has proven to be a puller at times when trying to say to other dogs at the shelter; his new owner should use caution when introducing him to new dogs. We have found that he has been a bit too interested in cats while at the shelter and should go to a home without small pets/cats. However, most of the time, he has had decent leash manners. Mitch may benefit from walking in a harness for better control. We also encourage his next owner to bring him to a basic obedience class to continue working on his manners and to learn a trick or two! He does seem to know his basic commands and has done well at keeping his kennel clean (accident-free) while at the shelter. If you are interested in meeting Mitch, please let us know!

Overview:
The Mastiff, an ancient and noble breed, boasts a history stretching back millennia, often linked to the Molosser dogs of antiquity. Renowned for their immense size, these gentle giants are characterized by their powerful, muscular build, broad head, and short, dense coat typically seen in fawn, apricot, or brindle. Despite their imposing appearance, Mastiffs are famous for their remarkably calm and gentle temperament, making them surprisingly affectionate and devoted companions. They generally get along well with children and other pets, provided they are properly socialized from a young age. While their size might suggest a need for vast spaces, their relatively low energy levels mean they can adapt to apartment living if given regular, moderate exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and eye conditions, necessitating responsible breeding and veterinary care. Their loyalty and protective instincts, combined with their loving nature, make the Mastiff a truly magnificent addition to the right family.
