Description
Dog Breed: Great Dane. LOCATION: Bridgeville, PA DOB: 12/20/2019 Leia is a sweet, affectionate girl who wants nothing more than to be close to her person. She is the kind of dog who will happily stick by your side throughout the day and then curl up beside you on the couch or snuggle with you in bed. Leia has moderate energy and is an excellent companion for someone who enjoys getting outside. She is a wonderful walker, loves hiking and swimming, and is an excellent car rider. She is always ready for an adventure, although her foster family notes that she has a strong prey drive and may want to chase deer or ATVs, so appropriate supervision and secure containment are important. One of Leia's most endearing quirks is her excitement when her person comes home. She chatters her teeth when she's happy to see you, which, according to her foster, happens often. She also has a funny requirement when it comes to daily life: Leia prefers her person to watch her eat and even seems to need an audience before she'll go potty. Leia is fully housetrained, although she may have an accident if she has recently eaten and doesn't have enough time to poop before her people leave. She is generally well behaved on leash and in the car. She is sometimes comfortable in a crate but may prefer being near her people. Leia loves cats and has done very well with them. She also enjoys the company of some other dogs. She has a great relationship with her foster's dad's Goldendoodle, but she does not get along with their Great Dane, so any canine companion would need to be carefully evaluated for compatibility. Leia has not lived with children but has been very sweet with children who have approached her appropriately in public. Her biggest consideration is her comfort around unfamiliar men. Leia is affectionate with women and does well with certain men she knows, but she can become defensive when an unfamiliar man approaches her in her home. Her foster has experienced an incident where Leia attempted to bite unfamiliar male family members who approached her outside the home. Because of this, she needs an adopter who understands her boundaries and is willing to manage introductions carefully. A calmer home with less household traffic would likely be the best environment for her. Leia would thrive in a home where someone is home much of the time, including someone who works from home or has a flexible schedule. She loves being with her people and may struggle emotionally with being left alone for long periods. She would enjoy having a canine friend but does not require one. Her ideal home will provide daily walks, companionship, structure, and plenty of time together. In return, Leia will give you a loyal shadow who wants to experience life right alongside you. If you're looking for an affectionate, adventurous companion who loves walks, hikes, swims, car rides, cats, and plenty of couch time, Leia may be the girl for you. ========================= To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! form.jotform/51994996709176 . Great Dane
A.K.A.: German Mastiff, Deutsche Dogge, Dänische Dogge, Tigerdogge, Ulmer Dogge, Englische Dogge, Grand Danois, Dogue Allemand, Great German Dog, Apollo of Dogs, King of Hounds, Gentle Giant, Dane
Overview:
The Great Dane is an impressive and regal breed, often dubbed the "Apollo of Dogs" for its dignified stature and noble appearance. Originating in Germany, where it was historically bred for hunting boar, this giant breed is renowned for its immense size and striking presence. Physically, Great Danes are characterized by their tall, muscular build, short coat (available in various colors like fawn, brindle, black, blue, and harlequin), and expressive eyes. Despite their formidable size, they possess a surprisingly gentle and affectionate temperament, making them wonderful family companions. They are known for being patient with children and generally get along well with other pets. While their size might suggest otherwise, Great Danes can adapt to apartment living if provided with sufficient daily exercise, as they are not overly energetic indoors. However, prospective owners should be aware of certain health considerations, including a predisposition to bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), hip dysplasia, and certain heart conditions, necessitating careful breeding and regular veterinary check-ups. Overall, a Great Dane offers a loving and loyal addition to the right home.
