He was found wondering the streets of san diego and we contacted the owner who mentioned they do not want him returned. Sadly, this is an all too comong story. They got him as a pup early 2025 likely off marketplace or online/backyard breeding situation because their kids wanted a small dog. They have had him since he was 2 months but of course as dogs novalties wear off the kids lost interest and not a single one of the adults ever did training so it was easier to put him outside in their patio.. We found out he liked to escape thieir patio, we saw a googlemap from their location and its obvious not a safe or clean situation. He was probably bored living a life in the patio alone, day in, day out and foudn ways to get out. He ended up in SDHS in january 2026 where he was chipped and returned to the owner, thankfully at that point they had him neutered but kept him now tied out in the back patio. He would stay there rain/shine with a dog house with old bedding for 'shelter' we were surprised when the texted that video to us when we contacted them to say "hey we found your dog" to only be told we don't want him anymore. We then saw why. Probably more trouble than anything especially now that the adults divorced and going their separte way. We have had Leo for a couple of days and we can say he is a very healthy looking dog, especially for a frenchie. His nostrils and breathing look great, his skin is fantastic and as are his ears, etc. No health issues as of now which is rare for this bread. Behavior he was very good with the dogs he has met. Definitely wants to play but like all brachiocephalic breeds they can play rought and box around with their front paws and body. He plays, plays, plays. We are going to venture and say he is not potty trained but he has yet to lift the leg inside the home which is rare for most male dogs who are 'not house trained' as that is the first thing they want to do, this little guy will lift the leg in the yard but had not had accidents in the home, we highly recommend anyone interested in leo is aware a lap band around waist to help potty train would be a huge help. He is NOT crate trained, the owner said he was and we wonder HOW can that be if they too said he was always in the yard tied. From what he has done we think he has trauma from crate. We will be working slowly with him is too early to say he can be crate trained or to say NO to the crate. This will be big determining factor for anyone interested in him. Especially if planning on leaving him home alone long period of time. He has shown well during car rides and leash walks. Leo has NO training and all though only 17 pounds a little 'small but mighty' pup he will greatly benefit from someone with patience, time and DOG TRAINING signing with an actual trainer in person and dog group classess. A retiree, work from home or has a home vs apartment living would likely be best during the begining for him to acclimate. Do know, he has jumped the 3ft baby gate trying to chase the kitties in the rest of the home. Not aggresively but 'moving' targets make him want to chase. Likely his only friends for a while alone in patio where little rodents or birds and tried chasing around. Leo is affectionate, clown, handsome pup who was wronged by his humans, the type who never should own pets and his next humans must have the will to understand and work with him for him to improve and be an amazing dog. A couple of months of stucture, stability and learning we are sure he will be a different dog.
