Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). Connie (A134243) is a 5-year-old Pit Bull who weighed 63.2 pounds on intake! 06/23/26 Connie, previously known as Coney, is back at the shelter due to no fault of her own. Sadly, her last owner was moving into a residence that does not allow pets. She was described as an outgoing and friendly dog. Historically, she has done well with babies and children, but was known to bark at strangers initially but quickly warms up! She was also said to do well with other dogs once appropriate introductions were made. While in their care, Connie was said to be kennel-trained, housebroken, rides well in a car, and knows her basic commands. Connie is quite overweight and we encourage her next owner to work with their vet on helping Connie shed a few pounds. If you are interested in meeting Connie, please let us know! 08/30/24 Coney, previously known as DeeDee, was brought back to the shelter because she had become destructive when bored. Coney was described as being a very loving and sweet dog who got along with children, strangers, other dogs and even cats in her previous home. Coney was said to know some basic commands such as sit, come, stay, kennel, and paw! Enrolling her in a basic obedience class with a certified trainer would be a great way to round out her training and manners and is likely to help with managing her destructive habits. Providing plenty of physical and mental enrichment and appropriate chew toys will also help! This will also help with her chewing and digging habits! Coney was said to ride well in the car and to be housebroken and kennel trained. she will whine to let you know she needs to go out! This outgoing, friendly and affectionate girl was said to be gentle when playing and quite the little lovebug! If you are interested in meeting Miss Coney, please let us know! 04/18/24 Delightful DeeDee is eager to find her new home after arriving at the shelter as a stray. Since she was a stray, we do not know if she has a history with children or other animals. On intake, she was the biggest sweetheart, and her personality has continued to shine! She was initially uncertain of her doggy neighbors but now appears indifferent. Please ensure you do slow, safe, and controlled introductions with all new friends! DeeDee has been very tidy at the shelter and we think she may already be housebroken! However, she may need some reminders as she settles into her new home. We also encourage her new owner to bring her to a basic obedience class to continue working on her manners and to learn a trick or two! We would love to help DeeDee find her new person to love! If you are interested in meeting DeeDee, please let us know!

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
