Description
Dog Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). Koal's family needed time to adjust to a new baby shortly after his adoption, and we are wanting to help Koal find the one-and-done this time around. He has proven himself to be most adaptable to other dogs and lived with a pit bull and other large breeds at one time, and then in his recovery home following his neuter, enjoyed hanging out in the presence of a small dog. He knows some German commands, and responds beautifully to hand signals and treat rewards. This is one boy we would hate to see sent off to boot camp for rigorous training where an e-collar was the first choice for teaching him, because we already know he wants to please. He needs clear expectations and a leader, and he will be the most devoted companion imaginable. Chaos is not for him.... but someone willing to be even-keeled, and develop a relationship with him of respect will be highly valued by this most gorgeous boy! No idea about cats, but he was in a household with an active toddler, and it might have been a little much for him. If you have management skills when it comes to kids and dogs, Koal would be a great consideration for you. He is housetrained, as well as crate trained, (his foster mom says crating is easy to accomplish). Koal is a great friend for car rides, too! Overview:
The German Shepherd Dog, a truly iconic breed, originated in Germany in the late 19th century, primarily for herding sheep. They are easily recognizable by their athletic, medium-to-large build, typically weighing between 50-90 pounds, with a distinct double coat that can be black and tan, sable, or solid black. Known for their intelligence and loyalty, German Shepherds possess a remarkably trainable and courageous temperament, making them exceptional working dogs in fields like police and service work. While generally good with families when properly socialized, their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation make them unsuitable for apartment living without significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be aware of common health concerns such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as degenerative myelopathy, underscoring the importance of responsible breeding and regular veterinary care.
