Description

Dog Breed: Great Dane. Meet Astra A Gentle Soul Looking for Her Safe Place Location: Grand Praire, TX Some dogs burst into your life with endless confidence. Astra isn't one of them. Instead, she quietly tiptoes into your heart, earning your trust just as she slowly learns to give hers. She's the kind of dog who reminds you that healing isn't loud—it happens in small moments, gentle glances, and the first time she chooses to lean into you for affection. When Astra first arrived, the world felt overwhelming. Fast movements, raised voices, and unfamiliar situations made her unsure. But every day she's becoming a little braver, revealing the incredibly sweet, loving girl that's been there all along. Once you're sitting down, Astra is right there beside you, soaking up every bit of affection you have to offer. Like many Great Danes, she loves simply being near her people, but she does it quietly, with a calm and comforting presence rather than constantly following your every step. She's also surprisingly in tune with human emotions. If you're having a rough day, Astra seems to know. There's something incredibly special about the way she connects with the people she trusts. Astra enjoys playing with her foster Dane sibling and has discovered that zooming around the yard and a little friendly roughhousing can actually be pretty fun. Toys are still a mystery to her, but she's learning that life can include play as well as cuddles. Food is definitely the way to this girl's heart. She's eager to learn and has already started working on targeting with her nose and learning "down." She hasn't quite figured out how sitting works yet, but she's trying! She's fully house-trained, crates beautifully, and rides quietly in the car, although she's still a bit nervous. Leash walking is also a work in progress. She does best in a front-clip harness with someone patient who lets her build confidence one step at a time. Like many young dogs, Astra appreciates a little supervision around tempting trash cans and unattended shoes. Astra has done wonderfully with large dogs, small dogs, cats, and her foster family's four-year-old daughter. She's gentle, patient, and respectful, making her an easy companion in a multi-pet home. Recently, Astra did have one minor correction with a foster puppy. The puppy, who is an exuberant bottle baby with very little sense of personal space, was blocking Astra's path while trying to push into a room Astra considered a resting area. Unable to simply walk away, Astra gave an appropriate canine correction. There were no injuries or marks, and she has continued to coexist peacefully with the puppy everywhere else in the home. This interaction suggests Astra communicates appropriately with other dogs and would do best with canine companions who respect boundaries or with owners willing to supervise typical puppy antics. Because of this, we think Astra's ideal home would include another calm, socially appropriate dog who can continue helping her build confidence. That said, she could absolutely thrive as an only dog with someone looking for a deeply devoted best friend who has plenty of time, love, and treats to share. Astra isn't looking for perfection. She's looking for patience. For someone who understands that trust is earned, not rushed. Someone who will celebrate every little victory, offer reassurance during the scary moments, and discover what her foster family already knows—that underneath her cautious exterior is one of the sweetest, most loyal companions you could ever hope to meet. If you're willing to let Astra bloom at her own pace, she'll reward you with a bond that's truly something special. =================================== To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! form.jotform/51994996709176 . Great Dane

A.K.A.: German Mastiff, Deutsche Dogge, Dänische Dogge, Tigerdogge, Ulmer Dogge, Englische Dogge, Grand Danois, Dogue Allemand, Great German Dog, Apollo of Dogs, King of Hounds, Gentle Giant, Dane
Overview:

The Great Dane is an impressive and regal breed, often dubbed the "Apollo of Dogs" for its dignified stature and noble appearance. Originating in Germany, where it was historically bred for hunting boar, this giant breed is renowned for its immense size and striking presence. Physically, Great Danes are characterized by their tall, muscular build, short coat (available in various colors like fawn, brindle, black, blue, and harlequin), and expressive eyes. Despite their formidable size, they possess a surprisingly gentle and affectionate temperament, making them wonderful family companions. They are known for being patient with children and generally get along well with other pets. While their size might suggest otherwise, Great Danes can adapt to apartment living if provided with sufficient daily exercise, as they are not overly energetic indoors. However, prospective owners should be aware of certain health considerations, including a predisposition to bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), hip dysplasia, and certain heart conditions, necessitating careful breeding and regular veterinary check-ups. Overall, a Great Dane offers a loving and loyal addition to the right home.
