The English Foxhound is a noble and historic breed, primarily developed in England for the sport of foxhunting, a purpose that greatly influences their current characteristics. Physically, they are strong, athletic hounds, typically standing 21-25 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 55-75 pounds, with a short, dense coat often in tricolor (black, white, and tan) or bi-color combinations. Their most striking features include a deep chest, powerful legs, and a distinctive, melodious bay. Temperamentally, English Foxhounds are friendly, social, and even-tempered, getting along well with children and other dogs. However, their high energy levels and strong prey drive make them less suited for apartment living; they thrive in homes with ample space and a securely fenced yard. They require significant exercise to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. While generally a healthy breed with a lifespan of 10-13 years, they can be prone to hip dysplasia and occasional eye conditions.
