Dog Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Lena (A142761) is a 1-year-9-month-old hound mix who weighed over 50 lbs at intake! 07/11/26 This sweet and affectioante girl is Lena! Lena was surrendered to the shelter due to the baby in her previous home developing allergies to her. Miss Lena was described as being outgoing and friendly. She was said to be kennel trained and housebroken. She has been known to get into the trash and jump on people, so she may need some help with her manners. Lena was said to be friendly with humans of all sizes, but she likes to jump up, so keep that in mind if you are planning to introduce her to little ones. Lena was said to be friendly towards other dogs. However, she really likes to chase cats and sheep, so a home without kitties or livestock would be best for her. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
