Description
Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). OTHER PETS: Due to Hooch's limited vision, he can both give conflicting signals as well as take time to learn another dog's cues and communication, which can create tension. Because this can lead to misunderstandings he is most suitable as an only dog. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Experience with positive reinforcement or willingness to learn. Hooch would benefit from someone who has experience with blind dogs, but would do just as well with someone that is willing to learn and adjust along with him as well. Due to his blindness, he will need a good relationship with a vet, and a predictable environment as he decompresses in his new environment. [Some Experience] KIDS: While Hooch has been fairly open to all the new people he's met during his stay at TJO, he may still struggle with unfamiliar environments at first. He would benefit from a predictable, relaxed place where he can explore in his own time as he maps out his new home, and would do best with older kids. Interactions with minors should be actively monitored for everyone's safety and comfort. [15+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Hooch is an active dog, but he is happy to relax as long as his favorite people are around to keep up with his `subtle` requests for attention (he'll turn around and lean his back end into your legs while he waits for you to pet him!). He does pull ahead on the leash quite a bit, though, and would likely benefit from a well-fitted harness and learning loose-leash walking with positive reinforcement. Providing Hooch with regular exercise combined with plenty of mental enrichment such as food puzzles, sniffing, games, and learning new tricks will help fully meet his needs. [Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: While we believe Hooch is around three years old, he was found to be blind upon arrival to TJO. We do not have a definitive answer as to what the cause of his blindness is yet, but there is no concern about any underlying condition at this time. He will likely do well with routine appointments with a primary vet, but may need to be monitored a little more closely due to his impairment. [Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Hooch will do best learning with someone who can offer patience while he adjusts. Positive reinforcement will help him not only learn his basic cues & skills, but also help him to bond with his new owner while building confidence. [Moderate] GROOMING: Routine brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
