Description

Dog Breed: Alaskan Malamute (long coat). Kobuk (A138335) is a 1-year-and-10-month-old malamute who weighed 103.8 pounds on intake! 08/03/26 This big guy is Kobuk! Kobuk was returned to the shelter because his Malamute ways have proven to be a bit too much. Kobuk tests his boundaries and in his surrendering home, he had become quite destructive. He was known to break out of kennels, chewed through a barn's wooden wall, destroyed a vacuum, and more. He was stated to be happy when outdoors in their fenced in yard and would even pull wood behind him. Kobuk is looking for a job in his next home that can keep him mentally stimulated and help him sort out his destructive ways. He is still a young dog and has a lot of potential to thrive in the right home setting. Kobuk was said to be treat-motivated and was eager to sit for treats while at the shelter! However, he is a large boy, and he would like to help himself to any food within his reach. Kobuk was also noted to get into the trash if the opportunity presented itself. On a positive note, Kobuk was said to be friendly with babies and children! However, it was noted that he does not understand his size which can get him into trouble. Kobuk was said to have tried to play with the cat in the home, but the cat was not appreciative. He was said to have a high prey drive and should not go to a home without chickens/poultry. He generally does well with other dogs, but does always depend on the other dogs feeling towards him. Appropriate introductions should always be made to help set him up for success. If you are interested in meeting Kobuk, please let us know! 05/10/25 This handsome young guy is Kobuk! Kobuk was brought to the shelter because his previous owner was struggling to get him to adjust to the cushy inside life. Kobuk is still a young pup and has lived outside for most of his life. He is looking for a patient home that is willing to put in the work to help him learn the ropes of potty training and manners. Kobuk was described as being outgoing and friendly. He can be rough when playing, and he has some puppy habits that he needs help kicking. Kobuk has been known to be vocal and to chew and get into the trash when given the chance. He also has history of jumping on people and counters. He would likely do great in a basic obedience class with a certified trainer to help him learn some manners! Kobuk was said to ride well in the car, and he is said to be friendly toward other dogs and adult humans. He does not have history with children or other animals. Please make sure any and all introductions are done in a slow and controlled manner to allow for the best chance of success. If you are interested in meeting this handsome fluffball, please give us a call!

A.K.A.: Mal, Mally, Malamute, Sno-Go-Malamute, Alaskan Sled Dog, Sled Dog, Arctic Sled Dog, Mahlemut, Moyle Sled Dog, Husky Malamute
Overview:

The Alaskan Malamute is a powerful and ancient arctic breed, originating from the Mahlemut Inupiaq people of Alaska, where they were indispensable for hauling heavy sleds and assisting hunters. Physically, they are a large, robust spitz-type dog, easily recognizable by their thick double coat (typically grey and white, or red and white), strong build, and often striking dark almond-shaped eyes that convey an intelligent and gentle expression. Temperamentally, Malamutes are known for being affectionate, loyal, and playful with their families, but also possess an independent streak and a strong prey drive. While generally good with children when properly socialized, their size and strength necessitate supervision. They are definitely not suited for apartment living due to their high energy levels and need for ample exercise; a home with a secure yard and active owners is ideal. Regarding health, common concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, and certain eye conditions. Potential owners should be prepared for their grooming needs and commitment to consistent training.
