Dog Breed: Cardigan Welsh Corgi / Catahoula Leopard Dog / Mixed. Nica is on the lookout for a home where she can be head honcho, the big cheese, a total queen, and not have to share food or treats with other dogs in the household. She has been well-cared for in her home. Her family loves her SO much that they are asking for assistance in making everyone's lives more comfortable. Nica would like to find a home where she won't feel she has to steal every crumb from the dogs around her. She is loved, well-cared for, and the information we have received about her personality will help us make a good determination for her next home. While she likes to chase the family cat, she wants to play with him, rather than eat him. Nika is a corgi/Catahoula mix, according to her DNA test! What a combination! She is housetrained, spayed, microchipped, and ready to be adopted. Details from her current family: "Nica is a wonderful dog: affectionate, intelligent, playful, responsive. She is housetrained, crate-trained and likes to be crated at night. She is a calm, mellow presence in the house. She likes to play with toys, alone and with a human. She good on a leash, good on long walks especially with front-fasten harness (otherwise can pull a lot). She wants to please and is very responsive to her humans (after a couple of weeks of getting used to them). She obeys commands (sit, down, stay, come). She wants to interact with her humans and thrives on attention. She is friendly with other people and dogs; she will greet strangers in a friendly way on walks. She has no signs of being mistreated except for food insecurity. She has an instinct to guard; she may bark out the window at walkers but not excessively and is quickly distracted by a treat. She will bark from the yard. She will chase squirrels and deer if they run (a corgi trait) but she is not nuts about them and on a walk she can be calmed to ignore them. When she did chase a bunny from our yard into the woods, she came back within 15 minutes (she got through a hole in the fence). But after she learned the perimeters of the yard, her instinct was to stay in the yard (with supervision). In other words, she does not want to run away and roam. She has medium energy (even low for a dog her age). She does not like being left alone, so alone more than a few hours may be a problem (she stays by the door and is there when you come home). She tore up paper a few times when left alone. She loves to get in the car and go for a ride. CAUTIONS: she wants to dominate other dogs she lives with, and be #1 with the humans. She would be best in a single-dog household. She could do okay with one other, larger dog that is friendly. Her previous home had 7 other dogs and from her first day here it was clear she was anxious about food. PERIMETERS: She should not be in a home with a smaller dog; she could hurt that dog if triggered as she was with my oldest dog. She should not be in a home with a cat unless it doesn't mind being chased and cornered; my cat sometimes liked it, and Nika often ignored the cat and they lay down near each other. She would thrive in a one-dog home where the owner can give her a lot of attention. She would be ok or even great with older children. She likes small children, so supervised visits would be fine (keep food away). She should not be in a home with small children due to being triggered by even a tiny bit of food."
