Dog Breed: Shar Pei / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $50. STOP SCROLLING! WE HAVE A SERIOUS CASE OF “WHAT AM I?” HELLO. MY NAME IS RICO. I am 9 months old, 38 pounds, ridiculously cute, and apparently a Shar-Pei mix. MIXED WITH WHAT, YOU ASK?! YOUR GUESS IS AS GOOD AS MINE. My paperwork says Shar-Pei mix, but apparently my family tree is classified information. Somewhere in my DNA there is another breed hiding, and frankly, I'd like answers too. Maybe I'm part Labrador. Maybe I'm part Boxer. Maybe I'm part potato. At this point, we're just calling it “Shar-Pei-ish with bonus features.” But here's what I DO know... I'm FRIENDLY! I've done well with the other dogs I've met here. I'm only 9 months old, so I'm still young enough for plenty of adventures and shenanigans. And I've got enough wrinkles to make you look sophisticated just standing next to me. Basically, I'm a 38-pound mystery package of adorable, and I'm looking for someone willing to take a chance on whatever fabulous combination of breeds created this handsome face. AND THEN... A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
