Description
Dog Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Rex (A142247) is a 4-year-old hound mix who weighed nearly 50 pounds at intake! 08/15/26 This handsome but shy guy is Rex! Rex arrived at the shelter as a stray and was consequently surrendered to the shelter. This is Rex's second time through the shelter as a stray, so his next home should make sure to keep him well-contained. Rex has proven to be a little shy when at the shelter. He is looking for a patient home that will let him come out of his shell on his own terms. We do not know Rex's history with other animals or children, so please use caution and make sure to do slow introductions. He has kept his kennel clean while at the shelter, indicating he may be housebroken. Rex does have sensitive ears and skin and will need to be on a sensitive skin diet long term to keep him comfortable. It may also benefit him to receive weekly baths with a sensitive skin shampoo, such as Duoxo S3. He did see the shelter vet and has his ears cleaned and medication applied to help with their current irritation. If you are interested in meeting Rex, please give us a call!

Breed overview
Overview:
A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
