Dog Breed: Terrier / Terrier / Mixed. Meet Julie! Julie is a sweet little girl with a wonderful personality. Since she's on the smaller side, we're not exactly sure what breeds make up her mix, but we think she may have some small terrier in her. It's hard to capture her size in photos, but don't let that stop you from meeting her in person! Julie loves being around people and has a gentle, affectionate nature. She's also working on her leash manners and is making good progress. We haven't yet tested Julie with cats or other dogs, although she did arrive at the shelter with another dog. She would do best in a quieter home with older children who can help her continue to build confidence. We're still getting to know Julie and will share more about her as we learn. In the meantime, come meet this charming little girl—you just might be surprised by how quickly she wins your heart! She came in with Bessie. A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.
