A.K.A. : A mongrel, mixed-breed dog
Overview: A mongrel, mutt, or mixed-breed dog, is a dog that is not the result of breeding within an existing breed or to modify or create a breed and belongs to no breed. In the United States, the term "mixed-breed" is a favored synonym over "mongrel" among many who wish to avoid negative connotations associated with the latter term. The implication that such dogs must be a mix of defined breeds may stem from an inverted understanding of the origins of dog breeds. Pure breeds have been, for the most part, artificially created from random-bred populations by human selective breeding with the purpose of enhancing desired physical, behavioral, or temperamental characteristics. Dogs that are not purebred are not necessarily a mix of such defined breeds. Therefore, among experts and fans of such dogs, "Mongrel" is still the preferred term.

More About Mutt Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

They fell on hard times and had to move to a smaller place which didn't allow the dogs. They are all brothers and very sweet and easy going overall. We will be adopting them all out separately though.. Temperament- Update: This cute guy was recently returned after being in a home for about 8-9 months. I am not sure what happened but he came back pretty aggressive towards strangers. Upon saying that he is super loving and sweet with his loved ones. The family who had adopted him said he turned aggressive all of a sudden- well we all know that that doesn't just happen. It appears that he has been badly teased and to some extent abused when he would finally react. So they basically adopted a super sweet dog and teased him until he turned aggressive. We are working on his issues but whoever adopts him would have to be willing to crate him when people go over. He would make a phenomenal little guard dog for someone who is scared living alone or what not and wants someone in the bed/room who they know will protect them this person will also need to understand that though Han Solo loves us he might not show well.. Possible growl during the first interaction and so someone will have to be able to come out and spend some time with him and show him that they aren't going to hurt him.. I still think he is perfect for the right person as he is a super loving, sweet, playful dog once he trusts you not to be mean or hurt him.. This little guy probably has the best temperament of the 3 brothers.. He is super happy and loving.. Energy Level- Average Dogs/Cats- Gets along with all the other dogs and cats. Housetrained- House trained and crate trained This sweet little boy is a doll.. He was perfect for shaving and adjusted the quickest to being in the rescue.. He loves attention and will make a wonderful addition to any family.. Adoption fee $100 includes spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations (4 for puppies), deworming, microchip, rabies vacc, collar and tags, training information, and all the support you need. Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Rottweiler / Mixed (short coat). Send us an email requesting an application to start the adoption process-- adopt@almosthomenm.org Approximate DOB 11/03/2015 Size - About 45 lbs History- A litter of puppies were turned into a rural shelter. Mom was an American Staffordshire Terrier and dad was another Staffordshire Terrier or a Rottweiler (nobody knew for sure). The puppies were scheduled to go to an out of state rescue however they could not get their health certificates as they tested positive for parvo. They were hospitalized and eventually got better, another rescue offered to take them but never followed through with getting them adopted, they then came to us. They loved their foster mom but were not socialized a whole lot as they had been so sick. Fast forward and they are very standoffish and weary of strangers, however once they form a bond they absolutely love, love, love their people. Temperament- Initially- Very standoffish, shy, and weary. Piquin would not do good in a busy home with a lot of visitors. She is very happy and higher energy than her brother. Once she bonds she is a sweet goofy little lovebug.-She loves attention and playing with toys. But you do have to gain her trust, once you do she is awesome. Energy Level- a little higher energy- she loves to play wrestle with the other dogs (she is with Jacques, Taffy, and Caeser). They wrestle, play tug, play chase, and just have fun but she would really love to have her own person to love and cuddle with on the couch. Dogs/Cats- Good with the other dogs and cats Housetrained- House trained perfectly using a dog door. There have been no mistakes at all. She is not crate trained. This girl is so beautiful, compact, and fun-- she is very athletic . However, gaining her trust will take some work. She is one of those dogs that should initially be kept on leash as she bonds with her new owner. Once she bonds she is the most amazingly beautiful, happy, goofy girl ever who loves laps and kisses. She would love a family to love and call her very own who she can sprawl out on the couch with. She will make someone an amazing pet as she bonds strongly and becomes an amazing protector. Due to her fearfulness of strangers she will not be placed with young children. Adoption fee $100 includes spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations (4 for puppies), deworming, microchip, rabies vacc, collar and tags, training information, and all the support you need. Send us an email requesting an application to start the adoption process-- adopt@almosthomenm.org Approximate DOB 03/01/2015 Size - About 50 lbs History- Taken to a small rural shelter as a puppy somehow she was skipped over time and time again-- no adopter took her home, no rescues picked her up, nothing. She grew up alone, in a shelter hiding under a dog bed. Then one day we started seeing posts on FB as the shelter staff and volunteers scrambled to try and get someone to notice her. Her time was up and she had been skipped way too many times. We said ok we would take her in- nobody had mentioned the extent of her fearfulness- so imagine the surprise when we got her home and she ran to the far corner of the property and would just bark at us. We would sit out there forever with her on the porch and then go inside and hang out on the couch. She grew very loving and is such a playful girl-- she absolutely loves toys!!! Her issue is it will take time to earn her trust- someone will have to be committed to keeping her on leash and having her with them all the time until she bonds. Temperament- Initially- Very standoffish, shy, and weary. Will stand at the far end of a yard and bark and bark. However, once she bonds she is a sweet goofy lovebug. She loves playing with toys and hanging out on the couch. She is such a different dog once she trusts and loves someone. Energy Level- a little higher energy- she loves to play wrestle with the other dogs (she is with Jacques, Piquin, and Caeser). They wrestle, play tug, play chase, and just have fun but she would really love to have her own person to love and cuddle with on the couch. Dogs/Cats- Good with the other dogs, however she is a dominant dog. Good with my cats Housetrained- House trained perfectly using a dog door. There have been no accidents at all. She is crate trained as well. This girl is so beautiful, fun, and athletic but does enjoy cuddling on the couch. She absolutely loves, loves, loves toys and will pile them all up together. She is too cute and puppy like with me and my daughters but very weary of strangers so will bark and bark at them. She will make a wonderful companion for someone wanting to really save a dog who needs a happily ever after.. She had been in custody for about 6 months and was just too excited for people to handle when they would take her out of her kennel.. One of the supervisors asked us to take her so she could run as she just needed to stretch out and play.. Sure enough we brought her into our program and she probably ran for about an hour just all over the property-- she was so excited to be out. Fast forward- she got adopted and started jumping the woman's fence- she was bored and the lady decided she was no longer going after her and instead got another dog. So now she is back with us and doing great just needs her forever home.. Temperament- Very sweet with everyone. She loves new people and new dogs -- she would make an amazing greeter for any public place.. She is happiest when she can see as many people as possible to keep her mind active.. Energy Level- Mid level energy. Dogs/Cats- She loves to play with the other dogs.. They can run and wrestle non-stop.. She gets along with the cats and kittens very well with no issues at all.. She just loves everyone and everything... Housetrained- She is great in the house.. Hose and crate trained perfectly.. No accidents ever.. Tinkerbell would make a wonderful apartment dog for someone who is active- someone who jogs or goes hiking or likes to spend time downtown in public hanging out.. She absolutely loves people and so visiting lots of people in the evening and sleeping in an apartment all day would be right up her alley!!! She is the perfect combination of social butterfly and laid back couch potato.. She is a perfect girl as far as socialization and being a perfect companion however she does have a few faults.. She is terrified of fireworks/gunshots and thunder and she can jump my 6' wood privacy fence with no problem.. However when she does jump I can meet her at the end of the ditch bank and open my car door and she will hop right inor she will go visit a neighbor who might be home.. She loves car rides!!! This dog would be a perfect traveling companion-- maybe for someone who lives in an RV or a truck driver who needs a companion.. This would be right up her alley-- nothing better for her than being out and about.. Breed: Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Posted Breed: Corgi / Golden Retriever (medium coat). Approximate DOB 04/08/2012 Size Medium about 35-40 lbs Update: Bailey was adopted years ago but has recently started attacking her older housemates.. She is very loving and sweet with her loved ones though and they are willing to help her get acclimated to a new home. She would not be good for a home with children or other dogs though. She does go to a doggy daycare and does great with all the other dogs - it is just at home. She is in Moab, Utah. History- This sweet baby was born to Pandora- a small Corgi X Labrador.. However this cutie has grown to look like a little Golden Retriever-- just beautiful.. She does need training and may have been mishandled growing up.. She is currently working on her basic commands and I must say this girl is very intelligent and willing.. The only issue we are having with her, which we are working on, is when someone grabs her collar and she thinks you are mad or frustrated she panics. Other than that though she is doing great- loves loves loves everyone she meets-- however can be pretty territorial if you are not home.. She is learning to curb her enthusiasm though with us and with strangers as she was never taught how to behave herself.. So she is now learning to sit and wait patiently for attention and she is doing good but still gets very excited sometimes and forgets-- when she first came back she would jump and bite and scratch you-- so she has come a long way.. But as you can probably imagine being a young energetic girl who loves people as much as she does that can be difficult so we just have to stay on her to keep all 4 feet on the ground and she is doing great.. She would make a great partner for someone always on the go who needs a dog who can keep up with them-- running, biking, agility, flyball, etc.. She loves playing fetch!!! Temperament- A very sweet willing temperament Energy Level- Has mellowed out Dogs/Cats- She gets along with most dogs - but should have her own home as she doesn't like sharing her family.. Is ignoring the cats.. Housetrained- Perfectly house and crate trained.. This sweet little girl will make a great addition to an active home who might want to participate lure coursing, agility, hiking, biking anything active this girl can join you at.. For being a young active pup she is very well behaved-- she just needs reminders every now and then and lots of praise for being good and she will be perfect..
